Any thoughts?
As growing learning individuals I think we all want to show these things to each other in our daily lives but I also think they mean different things to different people. I look forward to your thoughts. Fuzzy __________________ |

Tolerance and understanding, for me, are kind of tied up together. Tolerance, to me, means "I might not agree with what you have to say, but I heartily defend your right to say it." Everyone is entitled to feel however they feel about something, and one person's way is not unquestionably better than another's -- each person has to find, through lots of trial and error, what's best for them and what they believe in and value.
There are forums here I won't enter, and in fact have blocked myself from seeing, because the intolerance I find in them is, well, intolerable. I wouldn't dare to presume that my way is the only way, no matter what, and if you don't agree with me, you're absolutely wrong, immoral, whatever! Life is a journey and different people are on different paths, and at different parts of their path, at the same time. Respect is something EVERYONE deserves by virtue of being a human being. There is never any call for treating someone as less than human. None of us is perfect and we are all trying to find our way here as best we can. /soapbox Candy |

To me, tolerance is a way of "putting up" with something that bothers you. Like tolerating a fellow employee that grates on your nerves. Just because we don't like someone or something, doesn't mean we need to show that dislike, we can just tolerate it and not let it get to the core of our dislike.
Understanding to me means acceptance more than anything else. We can't always understand what someone is feeling if we have not lived their life or experienced all that person has experienced, but we can accept what someone is feeling and have empathy towards those feelings. Respect, that is something that there is far too little of in this world. Respect for others beliefs, for their thoughts whether we happen to disagree with them or not. Everyone has the right to their own thoughts. We don't have to like them or even understand them, but as human beings, we should be respectful towards everyone. Of course....this would be a perfect world, or damn close to it if we all had more tolerance, understanding and respect now wouldn't it? Hugsssssss J |

Thanks Candy, sabau and Direction..... just goes to show that some of the best threads don't have to go on forever
I always prefer hearing intelligent, compassionate, "rational" peoples' thoughts to simply using a dictionary Maybe because my parents were so irrational, intolerant and disinterested despite being "intelligent". __________________ |

for me TOLERANCE is listening to opinions of others even if you don't agree, and listening, even if the person you are talking to is not really listening or understanding back.Tolerating behaviour that maybe we ourselves wouldnt dream of doing.
UNDERSTANDING is imo , trying to put yourself in someone elses position if they are feeling down or wrong or maybe having a bad day and not losing your temper or going on at how wrong they are, and not judging them in any way shape or form.I think understanding goes together with communication. RESPECT is to heed another persons religion, thoughts, and to carry out consideration in their beliefs and not tresspass on thoughts or views they may have that are different from our own.It is also to allow a person their own space unconditionally. these are all my opinions only. I also think they are all related in the fact that humans sometimes lack all 3. They all have to be taught also. jinnyann xoxoxox i suppose they are all related in a lot of ways ...and they all require love....... |
