Well, to be patriotic...
One of the native birds in New Zealand is the Kiwi bird (a flightless one with a reallllllly looooong beak), and it's become our national icon (along with the silver fern). So when people say they are Kiwi, it means they are a New Zealander. We call the fruit "kiwifruit". It was originally the Chinese gooseberry, and got brought over here not long after the English took over the country as a colony back in 1840. I think it was brought over by the Chinese when the gold rushes happened, but not entirely sure. Anyway, we kinda stole it and renamed it the kiwifruit after the aforementioned bird and national icon. Hope that helps a bit. I'm a Kiwi that eats kiwifruit, and proud lol -Meander
