A woman in my weaving class told me I could buy Parvo shots at the farm supply store. I'm reluctant to do such a thing, but want to know if anyone else here has administered their own vaccines.

I have spent much of my life with animals and I have vacinated and wormed them on my own (except rabies). I have not done it in the last few years--I have been living in the city--so I have no dogs or horses or anything. I am not up to date on what shots are now offered "over the counter" but I think it is a good thing to do. Why pay the vet when you can get the same thing in the store?

seeker yes you can do it but I think you have to know the weights on the animals so the dosage can be accurate.

Thanks, both of you. The 5 month old pup, Henry, is due for her Parvo booster shot. I took her to the nearest vet office yesterday morning, and they wanted to conduct an exam ($37) before administering the booster shot. If I go with the vet, I'll just take her back to the original vet, which is a bit of a drive for me. The local pet store mentioned that with pups, it's a bit more tricky and so I'll take her back to the original vet who has all her records. I don't want to make her sick by giving her a shot when i'm so unskilled and lacking knowledge of these things. Not sure about my other 4 pets, but I know I can't afford vet bills!

ask them to show you how to give the shots and then find out the ones you can get at the farm store. that will save you money. they should show you how to do it though

i give everything except rabies. owner administered rabies shots aren't recognized by most cities.....i go to the feed store and get mine.
i have a bottle of penicillin in the fridge now that i recently used on Timmee. he had an abcess (fat boy fights) and i drained it and dosed him with the antibiotics. bingo! gone! would have cost me about $65 at vet. be sure that you get a small and sharp needle for the clear vaccines. if you do use an antibiotic, such as pencillin, you have to have a larger needle and it is harder to insert in the skin. you just pick up a fold of skin and slide the needle right in between your finger and thumb and squeeze the syringe slowly......and let it get to room temperature if it is something that has to be refrigerated. PM or e.mail me if you need "cyber" help.......xoxoxo pat |
