A man in my neighborhood was attacked and mauled by a bobcat while taking out his trash at 7 A.M.

The animal tested positive for rabies and the man is undergoing treatment.

I've never seen a bobcat before. I don't even live in the woods. Bobcat attack

Wow...that is sooooooo scary!!!

The more we humans invade wildlife's home and territory, the closer they come to our territories. It's sad, but true. Considering the animal had rabies, I'm sure that the illness drove it far from it's natural home. So sad.

I pray the man that was attacked recovers fully.

I thought all I had to worry about were alligators!

Sorry to hear about the man. Rabies are a big concern around here. I've only seen a couple of foxes but we are very close to the everglades (swamp).

From now on Hubby takes out the trash.

They said it was seconds after he came face to face with a male bobcat, that it lunged on him, bit him in the chest and torso and clawed his arms before some neighbors ran over to help.

They've set up traps now. I will try and be brave when I take the dog out. Bobcat attack

I wonder if his stupid Florida Homeowner's Insurance Company will drop him because he has an animal on his property they deem "vicious." Bobcat attack

Got any mace??? Pepper Spray???

Might be a good idea to carry some with you just in case. It may not do a whole lot to the animal, but it might be just enough to give you getaway time!

YIKES!!! I lived out in the country for 12 yrs and never saw one! You could hear them at night once in a while and a neighbor shot one close the the 4th of July, skinned it and threw it in the pit with the rest of the meat that they had for their annual BBQ. You can believe I didn't eat any of it! YUK!! You're not supposed to eat meat from a predator, are you?

It was probably the rabies that made him wander into human territory. Got a question, though. Did they catch that bobcat? You said they had traps set. How did they prove he had rabies if they didn't catch him? Or are they expecting to trap more bobcats?

You could probably scare off a bobcat with a good blast of pepper spray or the like. I don't know about a rabid one, though! Bobcat attack Please be careful!! Bobcat attack

This is the story---the neighbors got him (said bobcat) in a chokehold and were able to subdue him until help came. The animal tested positive and so the guy is undergoing lengthy treatment.

I think the traps are down in case there are others? That part I'm not sure.

The neighbor (think Gladys Kravitz) who knows everything is on a cruise in Costa Rica for a few more days. Once she gets back, I'll know everything. Bobcat attack

I've never been close to a bobcat (that I know of) but I did almost come face to face with a bear one time. I was hunting with my husband, it was muzzleloader season for deer. One shot is all ya get with them! I was walking down a skidder path and somewhere between my path and my husbands path in a thick patch of woods was a bear rummaging around. I had forgotten to bring my pistol (for just such times) and it scared the bejesus outta me!

I don't know how I did it, but slowly I walked back up to the meeting point, making lots of noise along the way. The bear must have been scared and took off, cuz my ex heard it running through the woods behind him too. LOL

But then again, my idea of camping is going to the Holiday Inn instead of the Ritz-Carlton. Bobcat attack

Pet you are too funny! I love living in the woods (not there at the moment dang it). I really miss seeing all the wild animals. We had deer, moose, bear, wild turkey, fox, fisher cats, rabbits, and so much more. I guess I'm just a wildwoman at heart Bobcat attack And personally, I hate the cities! LOL

I grew up on the coast in Massachusetts. The biggest wild animals I had in my neighborhood were the drunks on the street corners with their bottles of Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill wine stuffed in their brown paper bags. Bobcat attack

OMG....When I first started drinking...I remember having Boone's Farm Apple Wine LMAO!!!!!!!

I grew up in Connecticut, mostly Southington. It used to be quite a melting pot of Italian, Polish and French families for the most part. In just about every neighborhood there was at least one bar and 5 package stores LOL. Always within walking distance from anywhere in the neighborhood of course Bobcat attack

From what I understand, as told to me by the southerners around here, that packie is a New England term. Bobcat attack

I have always referred to her as Mrs. Kravitz

Sad part is, I'm not really sure what her real name is and they've lived here for about three years now. Bobcat attack Bobcat attack

There's one like that in every neighborhood, isn't there? When my two oldest kids were little, I had one living right across the street from me. Now, our neighborhood "Gladys" lives around the corner from me, thank goodness! She can't spy on me. All she knows about me is what I tell her and that ain't much! Bobcat attack Well, except that "No, I don't HAVE to" when she tries to tell me what to do with my dog. Bobcat attack

Yep...package stores is definitely New England style Bobcat attack Particularly CT and MA I think. In NH, we have state run liquor stores. Beer and wine are sold in grocery stores and convenience stores.
