So this happened a long time ago when I was around 15 (19 now) but I made a post on here the other day that reminded me of it and I still have no idea what could have caused it so figured I'd ask.

One day I woke up with no memory, and to this day that is my earliest memory. I didn't know who I was where I was or who anyone around me was, but I wasn't scared by that and I never told anyone. Most things slowly came back to me such as my name and who people were but there were a few things that never did, such as any memory from before that day or even how to sleep (for a while after this for some reason I thought when you closed your eyes you were supposed to hold your breath, so I would lay in bed staring at the ceiling until I would fall asleep with my eyes open or couldn't hold them open any longer and would pass out)

If there's any more info that would help let me know and I would be happy to give it.

we cant diagnose what this is with in you, what we can do is tell you if we have had this situation or know someone who had this same situation and what it was called in ourselves\those we know...

I know a few people with this problem. in my location this is called amnesia (not to be confused by the mental version called dissociative amnesia)

dissociative amnesia isnt something that a person wakes up on day with. its a situation where due to a mental trauma a person forgets everything that surrounds that traumatic event. it can be localized like this or selective meaning a person can remember parts of a trauma but not others.

physical amnesia that people can wake up one day and have no memory of who they are, where they are, what is going on can happen due to a physical health problem....

diabetes, anemia, epilepsy, stroke, blunt trauma to the head... those kinds of things.

those that I know who woke up one day and did not remember who they were, whats going on and such it was called those things I listed above with physical health problems.

sometimes medications can also cause someone to physically not remember due to the medication being the wrong dosage...

sometimes I wake up and can not remember things. with in me it is part of my having MS a neuromuscular disease \physical health problem.

my suggestion is contact a treatment provider they can assess what this is with in you and get you treated for it so that it doesnt happen again.

Hi, Clearhit, and welcome to Psych Central! I'm not sure what happened, but I definitely suggest you talk to a doctor about it (just a regular doctor will be fine) and see what he/she says. It could be a physical problem.

thanks for the reply's c: thankfully it has never happened again so I'm not really worried about it more just curious as to what could have caused it. supposedly I did fall a lot as a kid as I've always been pretty clumsy, but as far as I know nothing major around when it happened. my memory on a day to day basis is decent (horrible with names however) so pretty much its just this one moment where this happend, the only part that worries me a little is the fact that I still have no memory's from before this, and no idea what caused it.
Thanks for this!
