This is one of my favorite songs. It is a jazz song by the Yellowjackets, I really like them. Their instrumental version of the song is called "Local Hero" but Michael Franks wrote lyrics and they recorded the song as "The Dream"

I had this dream
In which I swam with dolphins
In open sea a transparent blue
(Maybe you dreamt it too)
And on the earth
The trees grew heavy with blossoms
The rainforests had not died
And the Amazon shined like an emerald

Somewhere, somehow, some way
We must hold back the dawn
While there's still time to try
Keep the faith, keep the dream alive

I had this dream
That we were all one family
Which war and famine could not undo
(Maybe you dreamt it too)
Our family name
Was either Kindness or Compassion
We recognized each other
And we recognized the light inside us

Somewhere, somehow, some way
We must hold back the dawn
While there's still time to try
Keep the faith, keep the dream alive

Listen, the cry for freedom
Echoes from Red Square to Soweto town
The barricades are broken now
The walls are tumbling down

Somewhere, somehow, some way
We must hold back the dawn
While there's still time to try
Keep the faith, keep the dream alive

"Though my soul may set in darkness,
it will rise in perfect light;
I have loved the stars too fondly
to be fearful of the night."

Hey Dexter, how are you ?

The lyrics are quite touching, yes...

I came to know Jazz near my 20's.

My first hit was pat Metheny in 1984. And Joe Pass. But it's a small fraction of all Jazz music has to offer, lol !

Born in 1963 of French mom and Canadian dad.

It is a beautiful song if anyone gets a chance to hear it. It is a modern jazz style rather than classic jazz (I like both and everything in between).

I'm usually a "music" person rather than a "lyrics" person, meaning I'm usually drawn emotionally to music and sometimes the lyrics follow only as a way to "sing" the music in my head. Like always it was the music of this piece that attracted to me to it but it is one of the few songs where the lyrics themselves actually make me, shall we say, "verklempt".

For you sci-fi fans the Yellowjackets also did some music for Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home, although Leonard Rosenman did the main score for the movie.

Simply beautiful Another song: "The Dream"
I am sorry that I am out of touch in the present music scene, I have never heard of this group or Michael Franks Another song: "The Dream"
If I have heard it on the radio, I'd not even know cause over the years DJ's do not tell you the artists like many years ago, every time a song would be played they use to give you the title of the song and who the artist's name was. I had been into jazz back in the 70's, like the group "The Crusaders", "Quincy Jones", "Ramsey Lewis",etc. I also love Oleta Adam's, hell I can't remember all of them, some are from my dad's times going way back, he loved old time jazz and ragtime music, but then like me, he loved almost all types of music Another song: "The Dream"
Well, regardless this song is beautiful and thanks so much for sharing it with us.
I always wanted to swim with dolphins, the closest I got was to play catch with them, give them fish treats and then pet them, it was such a special connection we made (Star Trek mind meld) as you can see not only do I love our furry friends, feathered friends, but love sea mammals Another song: "The Dream"

Thanks,
DE
