I figured more people would see it here than in the Drug forum. It comes up periodically around the forums and now you have it straight from the EPA.

Whoa! Thanks for posting the link. I have always flushed unused meds, sometimes in large quantities. I had no idea it could be harming the environment. Won't do that again.

Good information.

Yes, most people think that the filters at the water treatment plants take out everything. safe disposition of prescription meds It's scary to know it doesn't though.

Seriously, that's a problem -- they've been finding levels of Prozac, etc, in fish. For real.

I usually just return my old meds back to the pharmacy where I got them, because I know they can dispose of them properly. I won't just throw them in the trash, because of kids possibly finding them, plus there are a lot of drug addicts in my area that will take anything they can get their hands on,even if they don't know what it is,just to see if it will get them high. They could easily be allergic to them,or be mixing them with other stuff that interacts with them.
So I just stick to returning them to the pharmacy.
But I didn't know that flushing them could be harmful,I just don't have very good plumbing. So that's good to know!

how funny.

Really - my drugs would sit in my house because I was afraid of what to do with them. Most recently, I've given them back to my doc for safe disposal. Then I don't feel so nervous.
