I thought at first it was just because i am suicidal and depressed- and unhappy in life, but now i think about it.. I really do want to swap my body for 1 of a dolphin- it's not just a passing thought like i first imagined

what's wrong, if anything, with wanting to swap your body for a dolphin?

(i should add that I don't really like dolphins that much, so it's nothing to do with liking the animal)

perhaps it really is just because i'm depressed and want to be something else.

Hmm! I don't know that there's anything wrong with it, as long as you accept that it's not physically possible today (so if that's really what you want, you're going to be disappointed!).

I do wonder sometimes if, in the future, we'll be able to map and recreate our consciousness, and put it into other shapes/machines. Like, there could be a robotic dolphin that you project your consciousness into - and you'd actually be able to feel what it's like to swim in the ocean as a dolphin, breathe through a blowhole, and leap up into the air from the water. Maybe, someday!

Do you know why you want to swap bodies with a dolphin, given you don't like them much?

I don't think there's anything wrong with it as long as it doesn't interfere with other parts of life.

You get echo-location ! Nuff said

Seriously, why not though.. I've often wished for a swap with a jellyfish. Biologically immortal, and they float around like "bzzzt" omnomnomnom

maybe, but I don't think in our time (science is progressing, but not fast enough!)

why do I want to swap boddies with a dolphin... well they lead very simple lives don't they- they live in the water, they eat, they sleep, they sometimes get people to swim with them, they just don't have stressfull lives- and i could totally see myself living in deep water, without a care in the world

dolphins are very intelligent and do have their own stressers\worries like never knowing when and where theeir next meal is going to be, constantly being chased and preyed upon by larger animals of the sea like sharks and whales, getting caught by nets and fishing trawlers, they cant control whether a human touches them or not (just because humans are known for swimming with them doesnt mean they want us to pet and swim with them, being put on exhibit in aquariums, living in tanks that are too small or too warm, forget the pizza and doughnuts, ice creams and other human luxuries their sole diet is fish and sea food. many are force breed (the equivalent of human rape in my mind) in captivity. if in captivity forced to do flips and other acrobatics to earn their food and shelter...

my point At one time I wanted to change places with an animal but then I did my research on what it really would be like to live as an animal..

dolphins may look like they dont have a care in the world and they may be beautiful creatures of the sea world but me I wouldnt want to go through all the stuff they have to just to survive. for me Im glad to be human in this chain of life. I love being able to control how and where I live, what foods I get to eat and who I want touching my body and only procreating when I want to not forced...

Reminds of this song, "Dolphin", by Poe..

(I thought that she sang, "I want to be a dolphin" - but apparently, it's actually, "I've got to be a dolphin." )

Do you want an honest opinion, or just people agreeing that it's normal?

It's not normal to want to be another life form. We're seeing this sort of thing normalized but it's not normal. We're seeing more and more stories normalize this sort of fetish, but it's fringe at best. Below are a couple of news stories I've come across recently about this phenomena:

Man lives as goat:

Why I decided to give up my life in London and become a goat in Switzerland | Daily Mail Online

53 year old married man decides he's a 6 year-old girl, finds couple to adopt him:

laura beth,

your post cracked me up. it just did. so honest and to the point (perhaps it's just so easy to make me laugh?)

I can see your point amanda, but still it's diffrent.. dolphins don't think suicidal thoughts, they don't cut, they don't have to deal with feelings of being invisible, etc.

thanks for the articles lucy. they are interesting

of course I want an honest opinion

just my odd thoughts here but who really knows whether a dolphin thinks or doesnt think about self injuring and suicide.. there are plenty of situations where dolphins and whales have beached their self on purpose and when the necropsy is done many have been discovered to be sick in some way. who are we to say they didnt decide to beach their self and die rather than die at sea. there are plenty of situations where dolphins will purposely go back to the beach no matter how many times human rescuers lead them back out to sea. there are plenty of scientists that have documented how some dolphins will repeatedly rub their selves raw on sharp rocks if they are not feeling right. who's to say this isnt a dolphin choosing to self injure. bottom line is we dont know what a dolphin thinks about, humans are just beginning to learn how to communicate with dolphins. maybe someday the dolphins can tell us why they beach their self on purpose, and why they repeatedly rub their self raw on sharp rocks when they are ill.

There's nothing wrong with wanting...

As long as wanting doesn't become longing and longing doesn't become an obsession.

In other words, if you're not firmly grounded in reality, you run the risk of starting down a slippery slope...

do you have any artickles/ resources that supports that?

I didn't think dolphins were inteligent enough to think about killing themselves. I honestly didn't.

beached whales and beached dolphins articles are usually on the world news broadcasts and animal planet type cable channels. you can also find millions of articles about beached dolphins by doing a google search too.

I didnt say they actually think about it, I said ........who knows whether they do or not,.... humans are just learning how to communicate with them they cant tell us. I am making a ....guess ......based on documented behaviors of dolphins.
