I've known since I was 8 that most of my memory was already blocked out, and I also remember that what I did remember that I knew was safe to tell a therapist I did tell, though, it is like I can only remember what I told a therapist about and those things interchange and are rarely at the same time. I haven't found anything about people remembering things this way, and it rather confuses me about how this is possible or even if it is possible.
Is this just common and not talked about, or is it just some odd quality I have?
Also, apologies if there is a section dedicated to amnesia: I couldn't figure out where to put this since it doesn't really fit under PTSD or any other listed forum section I found.

No, this is not odd. I myself have very little memory of my life before the age of 8. And even then, for the few years after that I remember events not by the series of happenings rather by the emotions connected to them.

This has been frustrating for therapy sessions as we've been nearly unable to do 'memory work'. She seems to think it is from all the ECT I've had but I keep telling her my inability to remember has always been this way.
Thanks for this!
