I have a question about a recent baker act. I was baker acted for a conversion disorder vs substance abuse. I don't do drugs I don't even drink. The hospitalist at the hospital baker acted me and said I would be there for a month. I was admitted at 12:03am. At 10am when I seen the psychiatrist he just said what happened and I told him I was in the hospital for respiratory failure and he said you don't need to be here I will discharge you asap. My real question is can someone be baker acted for a conversion disorder? You can google it. Not at anytime did I say I wanted to hurt myself and I did not take anything to make me go into respiratory failure. They did a drug test and found nothing in my system. I'm in Florida and I haven't found anything about being baker acted for conversion disorder but you can not be baker acted for substance abuse that is actually something called a marchman act. Which I don't even see how that could happen if they found no drugs in my system nor was I going through any withdrawals. Thanks.

Hi, As I understand it, the Baker Act states that a person can be involuntarily hospitalized for any threatening mental health reason, including conversion disorder. That said, I don't have much knowledge of the Baker Act.

A conversion disorder is not a threatening mental illness. It isn't like the person threatened to harm themselves in anyway nor when they have physical symptoms have they harmed themselves. Now if the have a conversion disorder and say I want to kill myself or hurt somone then I thought that was reason not just a mental illness by itself. Otherwise more than half of America would be baker acted. Thanks for responding.

I can't answer your question but am wondering-sre you upset about this?

I'd get PTSD if someone put me in a psych ward for not being able to breathe.
Thanks for this!

I have conversion disorder and this is intresting i watched. A crime show about this man who killed his wife and one of the doctors was believeing he had conversion disorder. Because i guess he stabbed her but his hand froze or something like that so they were saying she was still alive and died later i guess.anyway the guy did end up in jail though. So i guess if that can happen i suppose it is possible to be almost baker acted.

we have section 12 law here. you would definitely have to be a threat to yourself or others for them to put it in use. a conversion disorder would not fit the bill IMO

And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand
