I told some people I would post a link to the newsletter I just finished for my Star Wars group. This is the group I stand in line with for the premiere of the Star Wars movies and we collect money for charity (we collected $18,000 during the wait for Episode II)...

Next year the next and final film will be out and the group just recently began planning for this last line in NY. There's a lot of planning to get sponsors, get the permits and insurance needed, permission from the theater and property owners, etc.

So the group is just ready to start getting back in touch with the fans who want to line up, they completely redid the website (here. It is Adobe Acrobat format, you need their free reader to view it, most everyone has this already.

Well I'd have to say... if you can swing it, it is an AMAZING experience in Manhattan. Not only is the theater amazing (it is a historic theater, beautiful interior, very modern technology with full 6.1 surround sound, digital projection system, HUGE screen... AND THEY STILL HAVE A CURTAIN THAT OPENS AS THE MOVIE BEGINS (two infact, a heavy outerone and a lighter sheer one underneath that opens sequentially).

But the experience of the premiere itself is just amazing. The premiere is at midnight and by the time you go into the theater it is like a huge party of your closest friends... the Zig seats I think 1300 people. Our charity group gets in about an hour early (worked great for E2 because it was raining Star Wars Charity Newsletter) so our group got the first choice of seats for the whole theater, then we got to present our charity check to starlight.

By the time the movie opens so much energy has built up, there is nothing like it. And the format of these movies is MADE for a group... after the Fox fanfare you just sit and wait for the "A long time ago..." (huge cheers and applause) and then once the bright yellow logo pops up full screen and the trumpets of the opening theme blare, well, all hell just breaks loose.

Especially since this is the last film... if there is anyway you can make a trip I would highly recommend it. Waiting in line is a huge part of the experience but if you can't afford the time it takes (days off) for that I can easily wrangle a ticket for you with no line time. (Easy for me to get two if your fiance wants to join you).

Depending on my state of mind at the time I can put you up at my house so you won't have to spend for a hotel. If I am unable to do that there is a guy on the team that is manager of a large Manhattan hotel... I certainly can't promise but he may be able to get you a special rate on a room or even a free room... I think he's been able to do that before on a limited basis...

On the website sign up for the newsletter subscription and take the survey... I'll also get you copies of the newsletters from Episode II (our webguy may actually have them posted in the archive section).

One thing I highly recommend for anyone who won't be triggered by it... our first newsletter for Episode II had an INCREDIBLE article on the front page by our newsletter editor (a VERY talented writer)... it makes me cry every time I read it. Our planning for Episode II was going to revolve around using the World Trade Center as a part of our logo, becoming the "II" in the movie title. We had some intense discussion about what to do, how to replan, after 9/11. It wasn't as easy as just scrapping the logo because we didn't want to pretend like they just never existed. We had so much support for Manhattan by the time the movie opened it made it an extra special event... with people coming from all over to show their support of Manhattan as well as to attend the movie.

(People from all over the country come to Manhattan to see the film, and people from all over the world. Episode II was released simultaneously around the world so there was no need to come to the US just to see the premiere "first" but we still had quite a lot of overseas guests who just wanted to repeat the experience from Episode I.)

Opening date is scheduled for Thursday, May 19, 2005 (less than one year away!)

The date could change but only by a week or so... ALL of the Star Wars films opened the third of forth week in May... in fact this and the last are strange as they are the only ones opening on a Thursday instead of a Wednesday.

The Premiere is at Midnight, so although technically on Thursday, it feels more like Wednesday if you judge your days by when you go to sleep Star Wars Charity Newsletter.

Anyway there is plenty of time to consider this. Like I said, I'll be able to get tickets for you almost certainly, and I should be able to do that up until a few weeks before the opening (I got one last minute ticket for someone about a week before the opening) so don't need to know too far in advance.
