My son is an addict/alcoholic. He stayed sober 10 years but fell apart after his grandad died unexpectedly about 5 years ago. He's used about everything out there w/preference for benzos and alcohol.

He has been dx'd w/bi-polar disorder as well as schizoaffective disorder.

He has 'episodes' of incoherency, belligerence, anger, and bizarre behavior (using his bathrobe to wipe up a non-existent spill, urinating in the middle or his room).

This past year has been nightmare. We don't know what is causing his issues. We can't believe him if he says he hasn't been drinking. We don't know what to think when he says he was "sleepwalking". We can't get him proper help b/c he is an adult.

How can we tell if it's drugs or mental illness? Where do I go for help? He's now working with the County Mental Health people, so you can imagine what kind of assistance he's getting. We're losing him and don't even know what to.

Appreciate any input.

Alcohol addiction and mental illness feed each other - ito doesn't have to be an either-or thing. I don't really know what the County Mental Health is, perhaps a proper diagnosis would be a start to decide what the problem is? I understand your struggle and I'm really sorry

I agree you should get a counselor, one who deals with addiction as well as mental illness.
