I'm not an expert but I used to have lots of house plants when I was first married and before kids. I had heard way back then (over 27 years ago) that it was harmfull to put stuff on the leaves as they breath and stuff would clog the leaves up. Of course I am sure someone else knows more than I do. houseplant

hey. i was worried about that too. i had a little look online and one guy was saying that the underside of the leaves do have pores and those need to remain clear - so you should be careful not to oil the underside of the leaves. he was saying that the top of the leaves is more about photoreceptors to collect light, however, and as such that it was okay to oil them. but... to be careful because oil can attract dust and that dust makes it harder for the plant to collect light.

but that was some random thoughts that i found...

so i was wondering whether someone knew more than that...

my stepmother used to let me oil the top side of her palm, but i guess i wondered if there was something special about palms where it was okay to do that and that i shouldn't try it with my plant...

no oil on that particular plant. just dust regularly or wipe the leaves monthly to keep the leaves breathing and able to photosynthesize.

happy plant raising!

hey alex. nice plant. i got a house plant a while ago too just to have something green and alive in my apartment. i have no idea how to care for it though so i just water it a tiny bit every morning, make sure it has heat and light and talk to it now and then. i figure leave nature alone as much as possible anyway. im a bit useless on the advice i guess but just wanted to share!
good luck with yours!

I hope you are luckier with plants than I am. Mine always die. I don't know why, I have always showed them where they can get water anytime...
