Tomorrow I get to see a psych about some problems I have been having. I think it is bipolar, social anxiety disorder, and adhd. This is my first time seeing a psych and I'm kind of nervous. What's it like?
Do you think that if I told him my symptoms and described my situations that I would be able to suggest the possibilities of these disorders? Would I be able to talk about medication options or will he just throw pills at me? I want to be able to talk to him but I don't want him to think I'm stupid. I just want to get the help I need and to get out with a prescription for something that works. Sam |

I would say to talk to him about any of your concerns and thoughts and do not worry about the meds - for any good T will not just toss a Rx at you unless they honestly feel you really need it or that it may help you while you go through the healing process with them...... to get a balance back into your life and mental mind as the bad stuff is released.

Hey -
Yeah I agree with Rhapsody talk to him about your concerns and what is going on with you now. Just try to be honest with him. This way he will best know how to treat you, and if medication is necessary. Good luck Islander |

Hi Sam, my psychiatrist talked with me and gathered up a lot of information before he gave me a script. It also took numerous visits before he discussed exactly what he thought my diagnosis was. He knew what questions to ask and sorted through all of what I said before making a decision. I think he also spent time observing my behavior and how I responded to him--not just what I told him. It was important for me to go in with an open mind and be honest. I am glad I trusted him to help me.

I think it depends upon what kind of doctor you are referring to as a psych. A psychiatrist is an MD and handles medication mainly, a psychologist engages in talk therapy. Either way, they are there to help you feel better, not to judge you.

Well I went and today was mainly a preliminary visit to gather information and decide whether it was right to see a doctor or not. I did see a nurse and I will see a doctor Monday. The nurse thinks I have bipolar and social anxiety disorder and I'll talk to the doctor about possible adhd.
Thanks for the help everyone! |
