Breaking the cycle of childhood trauma in rural Montana | PBS NewsHour

Quote:
...Montana... ranked among the highest in the country for excessive drinking and suicide mortality rates in 2018.

Ryan Tolleson Knee, a professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Montana, said deeply ingrained cultural values of rugged individualism, privacy and “presenting as capable and tough enough to endure anything that comes our direction” are vestiges of Montana’s frontier past. “Those were absolutely essential characteristics and values to have at the turn of the [20th] century, and probably less helpful now,” Tolleson Knee said, as Montana faces an epidemic of suicides and substance abuse.
Stigma = defeat.

Some thoughts on substance abuse.....in many places it has become "socially acceptable" & they are trying to legalize the substances. Like that will really stop the abuse of it.

Yea, I want to be "tough enough to endure anything that comes along" BUT I want to learn the skills that helps me handle those things because we can't control what comes along in life. Knowing skills that work & help sure beats having a breakdown every time something tough hits in life. Dysfinction has existed for generations & with that, lack of knowing or being able to teach good coping skills.....time we start learning them on our own & start learning how to handle the tough stuff in a FUNCTIONAL way
