People Ain't Always That Great | Psychology Today

Quote:
I had several patients this week who experienced some pretty negative behaviors from other people. Nothing tragic or traumatic, mind you, but still pretty negative. They were really disappointed in what they experienced and how they were treated. They really had expected more from these other people. And, although I could not come right out and say it, my thoughts each time were the same: “You really shouldn’t have been surprised."

Great read.

He says that just because we evolve in our thoughts and behaviors does not necessarily (or usually) mean the evoluntionary change is a moral or good one. We have to work at that (being moral and good). This was not something I've thought of before and it also struck me in a lightbulb moment kind of way.

Thanks for the Sunday thoughts.

My own Sunday thoughts:
I thought more on this. I like being kind, altruistic and mindful and positive. It has helped me in countless ways and I feel I've made my own world around me a better place - even if its just choosing to say nothing when I could say something (something unhelpful). No, these things are not always things that come easily to me, especially in the world we live in. But practicing them makes me a happier, more grounded person. I understand that the author is saying though, that when someone is selfish, rude or hurt a us, there's an explanation (evolution) he has found that brings him peace. He also says we have a responsibility and choice to respond to hurtful actions more maturely and mindfully. I'm totally paraphrasing but it was something like that. It takes work. And its worth it.
