Has anyone else experienced racial trauma during this pandemic?
I'm new here. You can call me Sprinkle. I struggle with PTSD and dissociation. Included in that is racial trauma. I've been experiencing a lot of trauma triggers related to racial trauma. I've experienced direct verbal attacks as well as microaggressions - mostly online, but some by phone. I also feel affected by the news. I don't have many friends IRL. The friends I do have live far away. The new friends I'm forming in my new living situation are solely online, but local. I don't get out much, as I'm isolating indefinitely. I'm afraid of being a victim of anything. I'm afraid to leave my apartment. I now fear any social interactions. It's challenging to speak with a therapist who doesn't really understand racial trauma. She is the best therapist I've had for trauma and dissociation, but she says that she's willing to "learn" from me about what I'm struggling with. I just wish she knew already, instead of me having to "teach" her. I really don't know how, as I'm still struggling with all of these trauma triggers. I've found some support with others who relate to me culturally, but I mainly speak about the local news and other general pandemic topics. It's challenging to speak with anyone outside of a support setting about specific traumas. I'm hoping to speak about these issues here, if allowed. I noticed a section for complex PTSD and the other PTSD, but racial trauma doesn't always fit within the PTSD framework. This is why I placed this here. Any validation, supportive feedback, and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! |

Sprinkle,
I responded to your other thread. Unfortunately, as an old white guy, I have not had to deal with Racial Trauma, though I empathize with you for having gone through it. I don't understand all the racial tension in this country...never have, never will. We are all God's children. Seems like we should all just be able to get along. BOM |

Sprinkle, I'm so sorry for the trauma you've been through. Where did it happen...work or with a friend (irl or online)?

Thank you for your reply. I was able to speak with my counselor about it today. She was helpful. |

I definitely understand and have been through that but I don't think I ever considered it trauma. I just get irritated and then don't associate with anyone like that. But I have had stuff like that happen a lot at work and especially in North Carolina and South Carolina. I switched therapists because she didn't understand me either. I don't usually watch the news because it is all bad news and doesn't represent some people. |

My mother and I have both experienced racial stuff in NC and SC! Back in the 1970s, my Japanese mother told me that, when I was two and she was pregnant with my sister, we weren't allowed to use the bathroom in NC because it was for "whites only." In the 1990s, I experienced different kinds of racism in SC (in the Marines). I also grew up experiencing racism in my childhood, from my father, from my family, and from my neighbors in the 1980s. It's horrible. It occurs everywhere, but it's more prevalent in certain areas. I agree with you about the news; they aren't all inclusive and therefore not representative. I try to limit my news these days, too. Semper Fi! Thank you for replying and understanding! |
