This is going to be an odd posting, but I miss being able to drink alcohol the "normal" way.

My chronic fatigue flares up too much for me to enjoy alcohol anymore. I can maybe enjoy one or two drinks, but then I know I will be fatigued for one to two days.

I had Fireball whiskey on the shelf since last year. I thought I would be able to celebrate my birthday online with some people I knew from the state I used to live in, but no one was available. I thought that maybe we could drink together online, with me drinking in moderation from time to time. That never happened.

When I tried to sip on a shot of that a couple of months back, to celebrate my birthday by myself, it tasted nasty. The bottle was already opened from last year, but I put the cap back on immediately after use. I don't understand why it would turn sour, but it did. It just didn't have the same taste. I was also sick from just that sip.

I could probably do better with wine, which I haven't opened. I purchased those this year, so I'm assuming that they are good for many years - not just one. I got a sampler mix, just in case I could find a group to celebrate with on Zoom on occasion. If worst comes to worse, I can always donate the wine.

My issue with throwing away the Fireball (and likely throwing away the summertime Jose Cuervo - which is also nearly full), apart from the money it cost, is that my sadness stems from growing older and more disabled. I can't enjoy the things I used to, and that upsets me deeply.

I know this isn't an addiction thing, but it feels more like a loss of some social thing I used to be able to do. If that makes any sense. As it is, I have to give up certain foods, and I've given up many other things in life already, like work and grad school. This is not how I saw my life at all. I figured that I could at least enjoy periodic alcoholic drinks, just to fit in somewhere with my able-bodied friends from afar. I can't. I can't keep up physically with anyone - when they go hiking or even walking. And I certainly can't keep up with my drinking.

There's this social loss that comes with disabilities, and this is one of them. I felt really sad throwing away the liquor that I've barely touched. The bottles were as lonely as I was on the shelf that collected dust for over a year. Their insides turned sour, and they were no fun anymore. I feel like that was the epitome of my life.

Sorry @SprinkL3

I am so obese and out of shape that I can't keep up with people walking anymore either.

I never really enjoyed alcohol, but for a while I was having one drink a day. Then I found out I'm prediabetic and drinking in the evening really spikes my blood sugar. But I'm not gonna start day drinking. So I guess I have to give it up too.

@downandlonely - I'm so sorry you struggle with obesity and prediabetes, too!

I think you're allowed to drink in moderation. According to "The Obesity Code" book, Dr. Jung states that once weight is maintained, or once you've made some progress, it's okay to have a day here and there where you celebrate and eat the foods on the "don't eat" list, but in moderation. So it won't be every day or even every week that we get to do this, but perhaps once every 3 to 4 months, which is better than nothing at all.

Because vinegar and fiber are protective factors, you could sip a spoon of vinegar and drink some Metamucil before having a glass of your favorite spirit. Perhaps checking on your blood sugar after that might offer a clue as to whether it reduces your blood sugar enough for you to be able to occasionally enjoy those drinks.

Those drinks are sometimes sold in small bottles and portions, which might be perfect for a celebration every quarter. But I suppose if we're prediabetic, we should really shoot to reverse that altogether first. I don't know. I wished there were more guidance on these sorts of things.

I do love my coffees and teas though, so I'm grateful for being able to have those I can drink.

Booze expires????

That's news to me, but then mine never lasts long enough to expire!!

I would have thought spirits though would be fairly safe?... unless it was something like Bailey's with milk in??

As a student I used to drink milk before I went out drinking..it lines your stomach ..if stick to same drink ..I didn't get really drunk or have hangover the next day.

I don't drink that much these days...I like a brandy or whisky with coke though I also like brandy in hot chocolate too at night when its freezing cold...helps me get off to sleep when the Tinnitus is bad!

My friends are picking up the brand new bottles of wine I've had for 3 months or so now. I just can't drink wine. I'll save like 4 bottles for myself, but the other 8 are getting donated.

Yes, booze can expire. There's a shelf life for both unopened and opened booze. I had no idea. I thought booze lasted forever or got better over time. I was wrong.

I'm not really interested in drinking alcohol. I like my Diet Coke better, but I'm not even supposed to have that.

I like the milk idea you brough up, @InkyTinks

I thought it lasted years cos usually the older it is,the more expensive it is.... my favourite brandy is made in cask oak barrels or something..there's 3 ages...the cheaper bottle..a VSOP version and an XO version which is the most expensive...same drink but matured for longer before bottling.

Sure I'd seen something on TV where wines and spirits that were the oldest were like over £100 a drink in some posh club down in the capital!

The aging process requires professionals to make those alcoholic beverages age in the right temperature and other conditions. Our residential homes don't have temperature controls or other things to make such beverages last. And once they are bottled, there is little you can do to preserve such delicacies for more than a few years at best, or one year at worst, or a few months once the bottle has been opened.
