I have so many things wrong and I've seen dozens of doctors and therapists the last 5 years and I haven't made any progress. I've taken every medication and ECT with little relief.

Have you tried a DBT long term program?

No, 2.5 yrs of therapy hasn't helped. I don't have control over my mind. It does what it wants. I have a personality disorder, asbergers, depression/anxiety, PTSD. The only time I feel content is when I sleep and my mind shuts down. I am so done with mental illness.

DBT gives you very specific tools to use and a long term program is designed to help you learn the tools.

DBT is different and I believe usually more successful than CBT. Especially if you struggle with emotional regulation.

It is the gold standard for personality disorders but useful for many people.

DBT was the only therapy that helped me. Wasted 13 years on useless talk therapy. Found an outstanding T & did 2 years of intense group
DBT along with my private T working on the things that weren't things one could talk about in group (the specific details) best therapy ever & I was struggling with major depression, anxietyb& PTSD. DBT is actually created to help with personality disorders but it helps with everything

The only thing I think I can't regulate is anxiety. I manage anger, agitation, sadness well. My anxiety goes from 0 to 100 in a millsecond. At Johns Hopkins they told me to use Mindfullness for anxiety. Two yrs ago my pdoc asked if I "made friends" with my anxiety after I told her it was crippling me. Lot of help she was.

I believe anxiety is one of the things it helps with. I think it's worth looking into if you haven't tried it before.

Yes, DBT helps anxiety because it helps one stop & think it through when it first hits so it won't go from 0 to 100. It also helps analyze anxiety we are feeling so we can counter it.

Used mostly for PTSD but when one problem is treated, it usually helps the others

I would suggest you find someone who specifically knows how to work with aspergers (ASD) because the ASD mind does have its own way of thinking, seeing, & perceiving the world around it. Unless someone really knows how to work with this, they can mess things up even more for you. People that do know can really help with all those other issues too.

You know the joke: "but the lightbulb has to WANT to change!"

DBT and CBT arent interchangeable. DBT was created BY a crazy person, FOR crazy people. How can you beat a recommendation like that?

Yes, anxiety and personality disorders are a constant problem. My problems result in a world that is somewhat distorted. I get anxious because I don't have any confidence with speaking. I stopped speaking at age 13 when anxiety and dissociation hit me hard. I hardly said a word for 5 years and I didn't feel a thing around me for decades. My speech isn't as quick as others, have trouble finding words.

I'll look into it. Maybe I have some hope now.

LOL.....it works, who cares.....LOL BUT it does take a lot of personal work that the person needs to be willing to do to get the help DBT is designed to provide. I seriously think that a T who specializes in ASD/aspergers would be best at addressing the issues from that point of view.
After living with someone for 33 years who had ASD, it is a foundational issue for all those other issues also.

I find it really hard to do what therapists suggest. They have to light a fire beneath me to get me going. Motivation and apathy are real bad.

Thats the CBT way - its behavioral stuff. DBT isnt like that. One session, we went around the room just saying NO out loud. Took the third time coming around to me before i was able to do more than squeak.

Motivation - whats that? The urge to do something you dont want to do? Ive had people blocking me for sooo long. Do i do that to other people? No. Why do they do it to me?

That may also be part the aspergers. That is why having a T who understands that part of you may be more help than anything else because they know how to relate to you
