I just had a bad episode in the middle of a text conversation with a really good friend. I suffer from tactile hallucinations (I feel things that aren't real). I was talking with her when suddenly I was hit with a hallucination of immense pain. I wasn't able to function for several seconds. All I could do was curse and shake. When it passed I told her what happened. Then my vision blurred for a second and suddenly I was unable to respond to her texts. I couldn't move my body, only my eyes. All emotion was gone. I felt empty and not there. I don't know how long I was like that. I came out of it slowly, trying to move my fingers one by one. It was really hard.
Afterward, I reconnected with my friend and explained what happened. She asked me if I have conversion disorder. I'd never heard of such a thing. I've had episodes like this for many years, usually preceded by something that triggers me. Does anyone here know more about this? |

Have never heard of what you experienced....uneducated thought, is it related in any way to a seizure of some sort?

If you Google "Conversion Disorder" you will get some results explaining what it is/how it manifests. But don't diagnose yourself off of what someone else tells you (unless that person is a doctor or a psychiatrist) or off of what Google tells you. It *could* be lots of other things as well. Best course of action would be to get a check up with your GP to make sure nothing underlying is wrong. Then if these events keep happening to you I would seek out some help from a psychiatrist or a psychologist. HUGS if wanted, Kit

It must be very difficult to have this happen to you. Here's a link to a helpful article that I found:
Conversion disorder: MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia. Hugs and try to stay on top of what's happening---I'd keep a short journal regarding incidents you're experiencing. |

The article MG linked ^^^ is informative. Freud wrote volumes about "hysterical neurosis" - what is now called conversion disorder. If I recall correctly, Freud had at least one patient who would experience blindness that was the result of a "hysterical neurosis." I believe that conversion disorder is a type of somatoform disorder. It is a very real and serious disorder, but it is treatable with psychotherapy and maybe medication.
What you experienced, Rainestorme, sounds absolutely miserable. I hope you will reach out to a good mental health professional - or a neurologist (you can get a referral from a GP). btw, there is a Somatoform board on this forum. I wish you well. __________________ |
