There is a man in my building who suffers from schizophrenia but also uses methamphetamines. He is terrifying when he has episodes most often after drug use is what I have gathered. His father let me know that he buys drugs when he gets money. Also his father and all his brothers were arrested in 2014 for methamphetamine production and distribution.
I am telling all of you this for context not for judgment or to dissect or try to understand why. The advice I need is how to cope with the disturbance in our building. There are times that we are fearful to leave because he talks of killing and raping and shouts racial slurs. His father assures me he is harmless but I just don't see how he can guarantee that.
We have called the police. We have called the property manager AKA landlord. I notify his father every time. His father said he did much better in a group home and regrets getting him his own apartment. We are at our wit's end because this can go on for days at a time especially in the middle of the night. I don't know what else we can do and it is exasperating my mental illness

Wow. That sounds like a really tough situation. I gather the police were no help and the landlord either. I don't know if this is possible but maybe you could move. I know that's kind of radical. But it doesn't seem like anyone is going to be willing to help this situation. Maybe if you could remove yourself from the situation it would help your mental health. Sorry if that is not the advice you wanted. Hope it resolves soon.

Thanks for listening. I definitely have considered moving however I get rental subsidy so that makes it difficult to find adequate housing. Our best hope is they don't renew his lease

Sounds like a very stressful situation. I would keep calling the landlord and the police.

His father might say he is harmless, don't the parents of mass shooters always say their child is a "good kid" and would "never hurt anyone"? My heart goes out to you. In my opinion your concern/ fear is rational. There was a time in my life that I was a scared rabbit, afraid of everything. Dealing with that sort of stress would've put me over the top.

I wish I had a helpful answer for you. I shared my life with a man who had bipolar disorder. It was very challenging to live with, but as long as he had a structured life (work, for example) he could maintain. Unfortunately, the business he was working for closed and that was that. He began using hard drugs (heroin, meth). He became horrifying. Hostile, threatening, constantly moving, screaming, awful. I had no idea why he was behaving in such a way, except that I knew he needed medication (didn't know about the drug use until much later). He was not violent directly toward me, but he did absolutely crazy things to the home we were renting. I called the police repeatedly. They were useless. I felt terrified.

It didn't take long. One night I called my daughter for help. I packed up my cats, my pet rat, and stuffed my little Honda and her car with everything I could fit. I left the rest. I moved to a different town and never went back. I was very, very fortunate at the time to have enough money to be able to make that move. I lost almost everything I owned, however. A nightmare.

Anyway, my point is...meth is the drug of the devil. Add it to mental illness and there's no winning unless somehow treatment becomes involved.

I really would like to offer words of wisdom or ideas. What can police do unless the guy actively commits a crime? You would think the landlord would evict the guy, but probably not, as long as he pays the rent.

I feel so, so bad for you. You already live with enough of a challenge with your own mental illness. If I give it hard thought, the best I can come up with is writing a letter to the landlord, a very serious letter - or, perhaps even better, asking for an appointment with the landlord, then sitting down and being extremely clear in describing exactly what's happening and how serious that matter is.

I wish you the best.
