Ever since I was a youngster....I'd babble babble babble to myself. Providing my own soundtrack whenever I'm alone, doing menial chores or daydreaming. I've been in part diagnosed with ADD without the hyperactivity so maybe there's a partial link in that? It'll range from mere vocal commentary on whatever I'm doing at the moment, to real stream of consciousness stuff. Should really record myself sometime and have a listen. Would likely be hilarious and somewhat alarming at the same time.
I've done only a little reading up on the phenomena so far and it's apparently not at all rare. I do think my embrace of the habit is a little more than the norm though. Anyone with any thoughts on this or similar experience? Any other habitual self talkers here? My mind zips along so madly that I'm theorizing the self talk thing is some sort of subconscious effort to slow it all down. Must do more reading on this. It's not giving me problems but after so many years of living with it, it would be interesting to know why/how it exists etc. |

I just wanted to say that I relate to how you feel about your mind moving by too fast. I have adhd.
I usually have songs playing on loop. Continuously. My husband gets annoyed that I sing the same song over and over but I can’t help it. |

Interesting isn't it? I've never noticed if I'm quieter when I take Adderall. I don't take it very often but I'll try it tomorrow seeing as it's going to be a busy day. I have a feeling the play-by-play and ambient babble will just be reduced somewhat. Maybe not but it'll be a good experiment.

For me it literally is thinking out loud. It helps me process things and solve problems. There's something about having to articulate a problem that helps me find a solution.

Yes although I’m not always aware of it but a couple of times people at work have told me I’m talking to myself. I do it when I’m trying to work something out too.

Unfortunately I do, do this. Its really annoying. Purely for the fact that I actually talk to people I see. They are random people from the street and people I actually know. I re live conversations with myself with them or talk about the past. It's really annoying

Took Adderall this morning and made a conscious effort to note what came out of my mind and mouth. I got a ton of things done but if anything I babbled away to myself even more. Sure seemed so. Stream of consciousness stuff and a near continual play by play of everything I was doing plus thinking about. It's so random and varied that I can only equate it to background thought made vocal. Seemed every few minutes I'd be vocalizing somehow about something. All through it I was in a great mood. I wonder now about it's links to mood.
I'm also now thinking that during my downslides I'm probably a lot quieter. I know I still do it but the frequency and range/type of topics might differ somewhat. I'll make a note to check that next time I topple. Shouldn't have long to wait. I'm about due for the blue. Anyway haven't found anything as in-depth as I want on this but I'll keep looking. Been wanting to find out more about it for years. I just hope the curiosity isn't fleeting because I know how my brain loves to dine and dash on things. |

Oh, yes. I do this too. My husband tries to make me stop it by asking me a question about what I said and I have to tell him to stop interrupting me. lol

Yes, many people think out loud to themselves. It can be a way to organize thoughts, solve problems, or simply process information. It's a common practice and can be quite helpful for many individuals.

I used to get looked at like I had two heads if I got caught doing it when I was younger. Now they can look at me like I have three, as far as I'm concerned, because saying it out loud helps me keep focused on what I'm doing.
