Kouhen Scott arrived at 9:05am this morning via c-section. He's 6 weeks early and weighs 8lbs 12oz and is 19.5 in. long. He has a headful of dark curly hair, the most beautiful huge chipmunk cheeks!!!

Poor baby has low blood sugar (happens when mom is diabetic, that's why he's so large for a preterm baby) so he's on a sugarwater IV. Other than that he is just perfect!!! I'm so happy and so tired LOL I've figured out that I'm just too old to be pulling all nighters. Just think, I get to go through this again in June when my other daughter is due with her second child!!! Woooo Hooo !!!

I'll be around at different times, I have my laptop at the hospital for Erin to use when she has a moment.....like that is going to happen often now??? LOL

Congrats, Gramma and momma! Can you imagine what he would have weighed had he gone full term??

None of my grands that were born to my diabetic DIL had that low blood sugar. What does it mean? Does he have his sucking instinct yet or will they be feeding him through an NG tube? How do I know? My last grandbaby was taken 6 weeks early by C-section, too. You'd never know now, 3 yrs later (just turned 3), that he was a premie! He's a beautiful, wonderful child! Of course he is! He's mine! LOL Your little grandson will be even more beautiful and more wonderful, don't worry.

hehe My kids seemed to get together two by two to have babies. I've got pairs in ages just like you will have. What fun!

Congrats, again to all of you!

Kouhen has latched on a couple of times for about 10 minutes each time. He is sucking just fine. In order to get his sugars up within the first hour of his birth they gave him 1/2 ounce of formula and he took it down like a little trooper! They didn't want to give him more since daughter was going to breastfeed. So they put an IV in to give him sugar water and it brought his numbers up nicely. They plan on weaning him off the IV tomorrow morning and I doubt he would need an ng tube (thank goodness) The doc did say that very often babes can have low sugar from a diabetic mom. Other than that, he is just plain perfect..... He's pooping and peeing and stretching and dreaming and crying....what more could one ask for eh? LOL

We thought that too (((((( Sky )))))))) but....

according to her ultrasound, Kouhen's femur measured right for the original due date ..... and ..... momma had gestational diabetes which explains why he was so big. There are some little tests that they can do after the baby is born to gauge his age as well...they look at the ears and how strong the cartalige (sp) is, and something else that I can't remember at the moment LOL. He also took after his daddy in the fact of being such a big baby

One can only imagine if she did go full term.....good grief we would have been looking at an 11-12lb baby.....phewwwww.

My poor little one and daughter....it's been such an up and down week for them (and me too).

They were supposed to come home from hospital yesterday but the ped doc wouldn't release little Kouhen. Two reasons, first is that he had a rough day on Thursday....wasn't latching on to feed well and he didn't pass the car seat test. His breathing wasn't good enough We think that since he is a preemie, his little neck muscles aren't up to strength yet, so as he sat in the car seat, his breathing was a bit impaired. He was also a bit more jaundiced on Thursday night. Friday he looked better and had a more quiet day although still not latching on well.

It's so hard to look at this little guy born at 8lbs 12oz and consider him a preemie....but that's exactly what he is. So, daughter was released from care yesterday but Kouhen wasn't. Luckily, they allowed her to stay in the same room for the night, as they could have had them leave the room since she was no longer the patient. Kouhen would have gone back to the nursery and she would have had to stay in there for feeding times etc, with no place to sleep.

We are keeping our fingers crossed that today is the day he comes home.....we sure could you some positive thoughts and prayers if ya'll are up to it

Thanks!!!

It was another long and stress filled day at the hospital today. It doesn't look like Kouhen will be coming home anytime soon

Once this afternoon while I was holding him, he took in a bunch of breaths...gosh this is hard to explain.....very quickly and then he stopped breathing for a little bit. Scared the heck out of me as I never experienced that with my kids. He started breathing again after I moved him around.

About an hour and a half later, daughter was feeding him his bottle and the nurse noticed that his little lips were turning blue. So the nurse took him to the nursery and got a O2 stat on him, but everything was fine by the time she got him there and his stats were 97-100%.

Three hours later, during his next feeding he started coughing a bit while taking his bottle and again, he stopped breathing and his lips turned blue again. This is kind of scary stuff, especially for a first time mom. Daughter is in tears and feeling very incompetent right now

So now they took Kouhen to the nursery because he's not getting enough breast milk and formula (they want him to take 2 ounces at every feeding, he's barely making 1 ounce). They are inserting an NG tube for feeding, hooking him up to all the monitors to watch his breathing/heartrate etc. and possibly an IV fluid drip in case he is dehydrated.

I'm very concerned about him...and my daughter as well. She's trying so hard to be strong but she's just a wreck right now (as am I).

We sure could use some positive thoughts and prayers right now. All are very much appreciated!
