Hey Everyone
How is everyone? Well i am currently a college student going for a bachelors degree in clinical psychology with a minor in business....I have recently come across an idea for a business and I was going to post it on here and see what kind of feedback I will get for it.

My idea was to open a "therapy center" in the central to southeast minnesota region. This center would provide counsoling (day-treatment to long term), psychological profiling, overall mental health care, and massage therapy/aromatherapy. I thought that this was a unique and useful idea...one that I have not heard of being done. Im currently working on how to intergrate all of these things into a effective therapy plan. Im looking for honest, educated feedback on this. If you like it/dont like it please tell me why so i can use that to make this idea more effective. Thanks for your time everyone! I really apreciate it.

This would be a terrific place. However, it's going to be really hard to accomplish. For example, what would your credentialing requirments be for therapists and councelors? Which brings up, how would you pay them? Would insurance cover it? Cash? Finding poeple to work "low rent" etc. I think if you could pull it off, it would be really great. But you know how healthcare is, especially for the mentally ill. Kudos for wanting to reach out!

Dan, take out the aromatherapy and you have the place where my hubby goes.

It is unbelievable! They offer care for mental health issues no matter your income. Their payment is based on a sliding scale. So for hubby we pay $0 for everything except if he has to be hospitalized, then it is $10 a day.....I told him I couldn't board our pets for that...lol

They have a pharmacy where they can distribute medicinal samples and trials to those of us with no health insurance or that can't afford costly meds.

There a 5 psychiatrists and I don't know how many counselors. And that's just in the office we go to, there are 3 other offices in the area. They also offer hospitalization.

I know they raise a lot of money through donations. I can't say enough good things about it. Plus I think the state subsidizes them as well.

If you want the link to their website, let me know.

Dan, you may want to research other states and what kinds of businesses they have. I know that my massage therapist works in a building with other massage therapists, an aroma person, and accupuncturist, and many eastern practioners as well as good old psychologists. They each rent space in the building is how it works here. There is no sense of this is 1 organization, just a building with a lot of great practitioners. Good luck. By the way, not that you really want to hear this, but a Bachelors in psycholgy is not going to get you the credentials you need to be a therapist so you might plan on a doctorate from there. Good luck.

Sounds great in theory. The pragmatics, though, I'm not sure would work out. I voted yes, but I really wanted to vote "depends on if you think it's worth the risk that you might lose a LOT of money"...

My assumption is that you are planning way ahead, and this is good! What brings you to psychcentral?

I have more thoughts, especially with the massage therapy added without other modalities as additionaly. As you will find out, touch can be needed but unwelcomed, and massage can bring out memories that the massage T isn't ready to handle...

If there is a need, and you can eventually fill it, go for it.

Thanks so much for your input on this! Im really appreciating this...i will agree with most of you there are A LOT of smaller details that i havent even begun to conceive yet. This is still very young in thought since i havent even gotten a bachelors....i know i will need at least a doctorate....more than likely i will go for a Psy. D so i can focus more on the therapy aspect. With the doctorate ill also have more credablity as a therapist also (in theory). But once again thanks for all the feedback and keep it coming! I so agree with sweetcrusader and wisewoman. From a business standpoint, it might not be feasible. I like the idea of getting a bunch of qualified people in one building. They could all share the costs of a receptionist, equipment, supplies, etc.

The massage therapist would also need to be a qualified psychologist or social worker.

1dayatatime - make sure you leave that link. The place sounds too good to be true. I'd love to see something similar all over the country.

Emwell, it is TOTALLY possible. I visit that very location once a week. If done right, like the place we go, it is an amazing place.

I want to browse the site to make sure it doesn't give too much info (location) before I just post it. If you want it, I would be happy to PM it to you. Therapy Center Idea

Dan,

I wish you luck. I'm with 1dayatatime though. Take out the massage therapy, and you've described my Community Mental Health Center. They also have p'docs there to prescribe much needed meds. The have case managers to help with housing, etc. It's a very extended and very good program here. I'm wondering if your program plan doesn't sound a whole lot like a community mental health center?

I wish you well, and it's a great idea.
