I love this community, but would like to talk to a therapist in person.

Most of the offices I've seen advertised around where I live get an average of $120 a session, but I'm out of work and can't afford even one session at rates like that.

I realize that these people are making a living, and have studied hard to achieve their professional levels, but where can I go to talk, get some stuff off my chest, and get some guidance?

I've even been thinking about going to a church or temple, but I'm not a religous person, and don't want to be pressured into adhereing to somone elses views. My goal would be to be able to think clearly and have an understanding of what's "wrong" with me so I can get on with my life.

Any tips in So Cal / Orange County?

Have you tried contacting a local mental health center? They may be aware of somewhere that offers free counseling if they can't offer it. I have never tried counseling through any church, maybe you could call and see if you must adhere to their beliefs to receive counseling. Another idea is to contact your local human services office, they may be able to point you in the right direction to getting some help.

FJRPC, try your local community mental helath center. They usually operate on a sliding scale fee. Also, you can try asking those private practice folks if they offer a reduced fee or sliding scale. Some folks in private practice will lower their fees.
Thanks for this!

you can check at any university near you to see if their staff sees clients on a sliding scale. the other suggestions were also useful, too. keep knocking on doors... i admire your courage to reach out for help. you won't regret it and you can and will feel better!keep us posted will you? i care.
