I'm facing a very difficult decision. I'm having my uterus removed (which is fine), but the doctor said they can take my ovaries at the same time throwing me into a fast menopause. The problem is they can't give me estrogen due to my high blood pressure. I'm worried about how this could effect my bipolar, especially since I tend to be on the manic side. I could wait, but chances are they'll have to go in at a later time and take them anyway. I take lithium & lamitil as my mood stabilizers as well as seroquel & buspar. Has anyone else faced this situation (or similar)? Any ideas on what, if anything, other than estrogen I can take? Any place I can/should be looking? Any suggestions & ideas to look into would be greatly appreciated. PS I have a month or so to decide - I just want to make sure I have more than enough information to make an educated decision.

Hello & Welcome to PC!!

Paskty, if you don't mind, did your doc state a reason for removing the ovaries? You could always get a second opinion, if you're uncertain.
Also asking pdoc about the early menopause & your BP might be helpful.

Take care.

Hrm, well everything I say will be complete conjecture and it may not be true for you, but for me (off the psych drugs), my moods and psychotic experiences track exactly onto my menstrual cycle. If that is true for you, then it may be that removing your ovaries would lessen the severity of your mood cycles?

The doc said I might have endometriosis, but that it's very hard to diagnosis. Taking my ovaries could alleviate any pain related to it if I have it. I know that I could always go back & have them taken out later, but that could be a pain too.
