Someone posted this in Current Events so I thought I would share it here.

Seems it could be effective in stress related depression. I don't think that is the case with me but reducing long term levels of stress hormones has many benefits. More study is needed as always.

Saffron packs a punch for mental illness

I would like to point out that crocin and crocetin are still chemicals. Naturally occurring chemicals can be toxic or beneficial. Many plants produce natural insecticides and fungicides that are toxic to humans.

It helps me but it makes me itch like nearly everything else! It did lift my mood though within a day or two... Not completely but I did notice something. Also no other side effects for me besides itching, which is saying something!

You seem to be allergic to every compound on earth ChangingMyMind. Over active immune system with something going on there.

Seems like it but I actually have never had allergies, not even seasonal allergies so I don't know what my problem is... Seems all the stuff I could take to help me causes something crazy with my body! Good thing is I'm seeing a functional medicine doctor that is in network with insurance and they're doing all sorts of new tests that my previous doc did not do.. Hopefully this will shed some light.

We know I'm way low in vitamin d but b12 looks good. So next step is to test my nervous system and sensitivities... Apparently when the doctor runs an allergy blood test they only check to see if you have anaphylactic risks not sensitivities... So this doc is running a test for sensitivities. Hopefully something shows up.

But yeah if I could take saffron I think it would work wonders!! I believe the side effects are minimal.. I had none besides rash and itching. Webmd says to not exceed "Doses of 12-20 grams [as it] can cause death." Which is a lot... Really you'd only take probably 15mg daily. That is what I tried in capsule form.

I think you could also just buy saffron and eat it but I didn't try that and haven't found any reference on it although it's consumed that way in food.. Maybe your link goes into that? Sorry if I am providing info that is already there... I haven't looked at the link yet.

The link says 15 mg twice a day. $30 a month.

You are very fortunate you can get all those test. That is extensive. You are right in that psychiatrist do very few tests. It doesn't make sense and I would guess it is costs that drives it. Also so much research is new and not yet adopted.

If
vitamin D deficiencies,
L Methyfolate genetics polymorphisms
Stress Hormones
Sex Hormones
Immuno issues
Genetic markers

Are all known as possible causes or contributors there are many tests they should run.
I have to believe costs are a big factor in this health care environment.
And a lot of it is new research.
