Has anyone tried Saffron? Any side effects?

Supposedly it works just as well as Prozac!

Hello Barrebelle7: I'd never heard of this. But I found it interesting since I sometimes cook with saffron. So I looked it up on a few websites. Sounds like the jury is still out with regard to the long-term use of saffron at levels that could have therapeutic benefits. But it's interesting. I don't know about any saffron extracts that may be available on the market. But the type of saffron one uses for cooking is really expensive!

I tried it but it gave me worse anxiety. Like meds, supplements come with their own set of side-effects, even paradoxical ones.

Didn't help with depression or even appetite suppression. Since supplements are totally unregulated there is a very good chance that the brand I bought was ground up cardboard in a capsule. But anxiety is a known side-effect of saffron so who knows? Do your homework on brands. There is no guarantee that the label matches the contents.

The worst part is that saffron is so expensive, no matter what form you buy it in: pill, oil or as a spice.

Like psych meds, your mileage may vary. It could work great for you.
