Met with Clinical Psychologist for first time today.

Schema therapy was mentioned, as was CBT and EMDR therapy...

Psychologist said she'd need to get to know me better before we decide on which type of therapy to try.

I told her that I didn't have much faith that there was anything which would help, but that didn't mean I wasn't willing to try. She said that was a good start.

We'll see.

East17 - you're lucky that you've found someone who can do schema therapy. From what I've read, it looks really, really interesting and helpful. There have been studies showing that it's effective with borderline personality disorder, for example, which is notoriously hard to treat.

There's a book out... Reinventing Your Life by Jefferey Young (who created schema therapy) that you might want to check out if you're curious:
https://www.amazon.com/Reinventing-Y.../dp/0452272041

There are some schemas that I *highly* identify with... like, when I read about them, I can see so clearly how badly they affect me, and how they make it much harder for me to get on with my life. I'd love to find somebody very smart and qualified who works with this stuff, but in my area, it seems there's only one therapist who does schema therapy. I haven't called her up, though maybe I should. She doesn't seem that great (based on her website) and I'm a difficult client, so... I don't know.

Anyway, good luck with the new therapist. I hope it works out for you.
Thanks for this!

6 years wow... The maximum being offered is a year. But it is the NHS and so everything on offer is time limited.
I guess a year should be enough, if I can't pull myself round by then I'll likely be dead anyway.
Problem solved.

It can take a while to build up the rapport and trust. Took a while for me because my former therapist sexually abused and exploited me

Hope you can hang in there with this T who seems to know what she is talking about. Maybe if you write some things out for her she will get to know you quicker and find the modality that is best for you.

I've been seeing her for 5 weeks now. It all still seems so superficial... I keep wondering when the actual therapy is going to start...
She asked me again today, if I could give some thought to whether I can really commit to this therapy.... I've already told her I want to give it a try. What more can I do? I can't promise 100% because I don't know myself... All I can say is I will try.
Isn't that enough?

I think all you can do is try and it's good that you are willing to give it a go. Do you feel able to raise your concerns with your therapist? It can take some time to build a relationship. Good luck with everything.

Still early stages of building relationship/trust with therapist, but hoping to be able to get there.
