Has anyone gone to the hospital and they fail to address your problems? When I went the doctor wouldn't evaluate me for a diagnosis, they just wanted to prescribe medication and send me on my way. Does anyone have any insight on what these stays are suppose to be like. I feel like I got cheated and I still have the issues I went in with.

What was the stated reason for the admission in the first place? Danger to self or others? Something else?

Most psych stays here, are short term with a goal of keeping you safe, and getting you to a point where you can be safely discharged. There's a lot of emphasis on meds management, not on therapy.
Often IP stays are followed by a referral to an outpatient group where you can work on underlying issues. splitimage |

In my experience, IP stays are short term, focused on getting meds into you, and getting you back out into a less restrictive form of care rather quickly, perhaps before one is truly ready to be released. It's not a perfect system. It's for critical emergencies where the provider feels you cannot keep yourself safe or that you are a threat to others. My IP stay felt more like being babysat than anything. Your mileage may vary.

I have a ptsd condition from my girlfriend being sexually assaulted. I was having nightmares and was thinking of suicide, so the hospital admitted me. They refused to even talk with me about these issues.

I never really found much therapeutic support inpatient, either. Even IOPs weren't always that helpful. It wasn't until I found a good private therapist that I made progress with issues outside of my bipolar disorder. I hope that you can find helpful support soon. I hope your girlfriend has good support, as well. |

It depends on various factors. When I was hospitalized, I was able to just use sick pay (I had to get a note from the hospital because I was off work more than three days). If I were to be hospitalized for longer, say 30 days, I would have to take a leave of absence or try to get short term disability (my company isn't big enough for paid family leave). But it depends where you are in the world, and where you work, and what your companies policies are. I told my bosses that there was a possibility that I would have to go to the hospital probably a month before it happened. And it happened over the weekend initially so I texted and skyped them and called into work and left a voicemail. Then I had my Dad call every day that I missed work to let them know I wasn't able to come in until work told him that he didn't have to call anymore. Hope this helps! HUGS Kit

Most hospitalization in the U.S. if for short-term crisis management, not for long-term therapeutic benefit. Hospitals simply manage the crisis and work to help arrange resources for outpatient long-term care via private therapist and/or psychiatrist.
