Now I have rescued three turtles which are located in between two fences, about a 1.5 foot entrapment into which the Jack Russell, Pepe, worms his way under the wire below the descending privacy fence to get to the turtles. He's obsessed! There are two fences, my privacy fence and another fence on the other side, with 1.5 feet of space between them. The turtles apparently like this area, which is no longer safe for them, because of the "go to ground" nature of the Jack Russell. Also, now, he has taught my Golden Retriever to worm his way into the area. A neighbor came to my door the other day to inform me that both my dogs were trapped in the area between the fences! Fozzie, the Golden, was beside himself with excitement at having learned how to do this. They did squeeze back out and come to me when I called them, but now I must figure out a way to block this entrance, as they could be trapped in there all day when I return to work!

trutles are very cool . I took in 3 years ago. I raised them on the stove as they were babys and needed to be warm. Finally let them go after 2 years .
I hope you do well with them. You are a kind person.

Yoda, I love the pic!

Here in Florida we have a ground tortoise called a gopher. (Yeah, I know in the rest of the world gophers are mamals, but Florida has it's own separate way of naming things! )

Anyway, I used to have an Australian shepherd who was obsessed with the gophers. She'd find one and bark at it like a loon. It made her even crazier when they'd pull into their shell to hide. She'd be standing there barking up a storm, wanting them to move while the poor gopher was doing it's best to hide. Eventually I'd end up yelling at her to leave the poor thing alone. She seemed to think I was a real spoilsport. She thought I was exceptionally mean when I'd get mad at her for trying to dig them out of their tunnels. Aside from not wanting my property uprooted rattlesnakes like to live in the gopher's tunnels. I had visions of her coming backward out of a tunnel with a snake clamped on her nose.

You are so very welcome.

Rattlesnakes? Ewwwww. I don't like poisonous snakes much. But to be honest I haven't seen a rattlesnake in the wild ever and haven't seen a copperhead in the wild in at least thirty years.

I have had at least eight snakes come in my house in the twenty years I have been here on the farm. I killed the first two thinking they were copperheads but studied them and found they were rat snakes. Now I know the difference in them and I don't kill them anymore. My son and I tried to capture one in a box to take it outside but the snake had other ideas and went under the fridge. Neither of us are afraid of snakes so we just left it alone and we would see it throughout the house for a couple weeks and I guess it got bored and left.

We get the occasional lizard visiting too. I love their bright patterns. Sad story though - one of them crawled under my son's x-box and got squished.

LOL, Yoda
Muff...I took all three of the turtles down into the woods over the hill near my home. These were BIG fellas..two were the "box" turtles which were completely closed up and could protect themselves from the Jack Russell, but one was some kind of turtle that couldn't close up completely, his appendages still somewhat exposed. I did some research on turtles in WV and maybe he is a "wood" turtle.
Yes, Lizardlady,I can see how an Aussie would love to go after turtles also. Heaven forbid a snake to appear!
