I just got my first issue of Cesar's Way (dog whisperer) and he has an article in the magazine about humans medicine that is safe and harmful to our canine friends, so I wanted to share... always check with your vet for the correct dosage for your pet, usually based on weight.
SAFE: 1. Benadryl - used to treat any thing from bee stings to allergic reactions * you can also use Claritin & Zyrtec 2. Pepcid & Zantac - upset stomach and ulcers 3. Dramamine - prevention of car sickness 4. Cortisone Cream - effective on minor itchy areas and red bumps from bites 5. Neosporin (triple antibiotic cream) - moisturizes and heals minor wounds * clean area before applying cream SAFE, but... 1. Pepto-Bismol - used for intestinal issues and diarrhea, but should never be given more than twice a day due to it being aspirin based. NEVER!! (can kill) 1. Tylenol 2. Advil 3. Motrin 4. Aspirin 5. Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen * * * * |

Thanks for the info. I use pepto on my dog. The vet said always get the off brand because the original brand is too strong. It does help him but he hates the taste lol (don't we all).

In my earlier years, I worked at a vet clinic as an assistant. The doc there told me that Aspirin was fine for our K9 friends.
Also mentioned that K9's and humans share the same basic metabolism, and some antibiotics we use are also quite similar. Hmm...Interesting. Thanks Rhaps, for sharing. Shangrala ![]()

A pdoc I used to see wanted me to try one of the older generation antidepressants - Amatryptaline. It didn't work for me, but I was quite amused to learn that it's also prescribed to cats.

Instead of Pepto, you might try Kaopectate. I've found it works better and doesn't upset their stomach as bad. Asprin is ok with right dosage...it's basicly what the vets use, just in a different form, of course.

My oldest dog tends to have allergy problems so we've been giving him bendryl for years. It's good to know that it's safe (and maybe we'll start using cortisone) as well.
