Another article from the Dog Whisperer Magazine.... what NOT to feed your DOG.

Don't Feed This to Your Dog!

1. Chocolate, Coffee, Caffeine

Can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abnormal heart beats, seizures and even death.

2. Gum, Candy, Baked Goods, Toothpaste

Many of these items contain a sweetener (Xylitol) which can cause liver failure in dogs.

3. Grapes & Raisins

These specific fruits cause canine kidney failure

4. Milk

Dogs lack the enzyme that break down lactose... therefore, can cause diarrhea

5. Onions, Garlic and Chives

Although more of a problem for cats, large amounts can lead to gastrointestinal irritations and anemia in dogs.

6. Avocado Skin

Cause diarrhea in dogs and can kill pet birds and rodents.

7. Alcohol

Drinks and food made with alcohol should be avoided as they can cause vomiting, diarrhea and death.

8. Cooked Bones

They splinter more easy than raw bones and can become lodged in a dogs digestive tract.

9. Moldy Foods

Small amount - can cause diarrhea in dogs
Large amount - can cause seizures and even death

10. Macadamia Nuts

Can cause a wide range of symptoms - from depression to tremors to hyperthermia... can last up to 48 hours.

.... lets be careful what we feed our dogs or leave laying around the house.
Thanks for this!

None of the above.
Medi-cal Dental Formula
Milkbones
and pupperoni.
the odd bit of chicken skin and scraps, very rarely though.

We feed our dogs a lot of human food, basically all our scraps that we cook into a broth and pour on their pellets (I think you call it kibble). The Vet has approved their diet and our dogs are really healthy. Most of what is on that list I wouldn't feed them anyway. With the exception of garlic. We add garlic to their food and guess what? No fleas!! (Also suggested by our Vet).

Yeah I have heard about garlic helping rid dogs of fleas.... and in small amount its probably ok
but in large amounts it can cause GI issues in dogs and cats.

I think the list is more to let us know what NOT to leave around the kitchen so our curious pets can get into if they so desire.

I hate to sound bigheaded, but any dog owner should know that no dog should be given ANY form of human food! It's what dog food was made for... Because of the fact that most human foods have things in that animals are allergic to.

As I said, not meaning to blow my own trumpet, but it's pretty much common sense and I knew this without having to be told and I know that a lot of people probably do. It was a great idea putting this up, for those that don't know... But I think it is something that ALL dog owners should be told by their vets and the animals' previous owner(s) and I think that it is purely common sense.

I hate to get so irate about it, but it makes me so, so, SO angry that so many people don't know this and so many freakin' animals are killed because of owners not taking into account that animal food is made specifically for animals and human food, for humans. It is so upsetting and so frustrating that people just don't take the time to think about it.

Sorry for the rant lol. Just saw this and had a lot to say

My dog gets Hills Science Diet Senior Formula food, a monitored amount of people food, mostly chicken and turkey, some beef and pork in very limited amounts and some pizza. She loves pizza lol. We just celebrated her 15th Birthday on Monday. Had her to the vet today and she is very healthy for her age. I think when it comes to the human food, its everything in moderation, just like it is for us humans. To think back before they made dog food, what else did the dogs get? Granted, they probably didnt live as long, but neither did humans lol. We are very blessed to have our Heidi Sue, and I wouldn't do anything to harm her.

I knew about 1, 3, 4, 7, and 8.... and who would give their dogs moldy food?? That is disgusting!

My puppy mostly eats her dog food/treats but when feeling generous we put a little bit of peanut butter on her treats and if we get peanut butter on our hands she gets to have it peanut butter is the only human food I let her have. but one time she did sneak away and got into the garbage and licked a paper plate that previously has lasagna on it

Also I should add that when we adopted her they told us that pork/pork products can cause indigestion and diarrhea in dogs so they advised against giving it to her at any amount.

I have heard that peanuts and peanut butter is very dangerous to dogs. I can't substantiate this, just heard it somewhere.

I do think about it........... I don't just blindly feed my dogs human food. There dog food is supplemented with our Vets approval and our dogs are healthy.

Beef/Chicken/Turkey gets added to our dogs' food daily. We cook it down and add it for extra protein mainly for our German Shepard and we've been doing it since she was a puppy. Meat scraps and steak bones have always been given and our german shepard LOVES asparagus.

The only human food I give my dogs are a few pieces of popcorn as a treat when we (the humans) are eating it while watching a rented movie... which is only about twice a month.

I wonder what the Dog Whisperer would say about popcorn?

If he says it's bad then we're in trouble, sometimes when my brother is having popcorn he'll give her a piece for doing tricks instead of her regular treats
