I recently adopted a baby guinea pig ( Female ) 5-6 weeks old that I named Baylee, and she keeps biting people. My other 2 guinea pigs dont do it ( Though there around 3-4years old ). I'm just wondering if maybe she's doing this because she's not matured yet? I know its not likely for guinea pigs to bite. She is not mean, She's actually lovable, but sometimes she gets into this crazy mood where she runs around everywhere jumping in the air. I'm guessing it's because of her age, since she has not matured yet, but i'm not possitive. Maybe this is just her personality? She only calms down when she gets food LOL.
Baylee also loves kicking her bedding out of her cage LOL What do you guys think about this? Should I take her to the vet to see if there's anything wrong? Heres a picture of Baylee eating like usual <3 ![]() ![]()

I had a guinea pig when I was younger who did this; I called it her "spastic" stage. I thought something was wrong at the time. The vet told me to get her a wheel or a ball to roll in for exercise and to get the energy out; the ball worked better but I ended up getting the wheels for her cage. Secondly getting something appropriate to chew on, redirect this need to bite; they make guinea pig chew toys for this age, any age, natural instinct. If not in the pet store, there are places online if look up 'guinea pig toys'. She grew out of the biting and the energy but continued to love the ball and wheel anyway. Try this first before going to the vet. Hope this helps.

Thanks Fresia ! We have her in a huge cage, so she gets alot of room to run around. I didnt know they could go in balls and wheels, I'll have to buy them for her. Thanks for the advice. :]

I had a pair of brother guinea pigs when I was in high school (many many many years ago). My parents wouldn't let me keep them in the house to start, so my dad made a huge pen in the back yard for them to run around in.....then I would let them out in the yard.....everytime they ate the dandelions, they would jump & run around like you describe yours doing....I thought the dandelions were like catnip for guinea pigs. I never did get bit by any of them....but think giving them the chewing sticks or something might be a good idea...just so they don't think your finger is a chew stick, you will be ok.
My daughter also had an adorable guinea pig....he was well trained, if he was down stairs in the family room, he would run up the stairs, down the hall, into my daughters room, up the ramp & into her cage....very smart little characters. I really enjoy them. Hope this is just a stage....sure it will all work out as you are together longer.

When she jumps around her cage, it sounds like she's "popcorning". It means they're happy

Thanks for the info about Dandelions Eskie and the website too Indie! They make wheels specifically for guiny's now, no slit, solid all the way around with rivets for traction and open on one side so it is not an issue anymore; the slits in the balls are made for them and are not like hamster slits, not so open, but more of them and narrower, better designed for just this issue. This was an issue before but the products have improved.
I appreciate all this discussion as have been considering getting another one, so cute and fun to be with. Thanks again! |

Thanks for the replys everyone.
We ended up calling are vet, She said every once in a while there are Guinea's that bite, and she might not grow out of it, it is hard to tell. The only thing we can do is get her this bitter/sour stuff to put on are hands so when she bites, it will taste pretty bad and maybe it will help her stop doing it. I hope she grows out of this, When we first brung her home, like the first few days she was not doing this, but now that she's getting used to use she got into the bad habbit. I dont know if these are love bites or ment to hurt us LOOL Thanks again everyone ![]()
