My two year old has developed allergies to our dogs, now both my puppies have to go. My son has a heart defect, and I will not put him on drugs so we can keep the dogs. I love my dogs, but I love my son more. I've had dogs for the last 15 years, I can't stand the thought of not having dogs. I just hope he doesn't turn out to be allergic to the cats too, it would kill me not to have ANY pets. Oh this is awful.

Just open up your eyes as I lay you down tonight
Safe on the other side

I'm so sorry....

That must be really difficult for you and your family. Your Son's health is of most importance for sure, but is there any way you can get him allergy shots? Have you been able to have him tested for allergies to dogs to make sure?

I would hate to see you rehome both your dogs to find out later that it was actually an allergy to something else.

I wish you and your family the best!!

There are breeds that are hypoallergenic like poodles. These dogs have hair and not fur. The dog the president chose for his girls is that kind of dog as they are allergic too. Your doctor could probably do a test to find out if your son is allergic to cats.
It is hard as my grand kids are allergic to their dog. When she is put down (hard time moving round with hip dysplasia) they will just have their two poodles as pets and will be able to get off the medication.
If you want a big dog there are standard poodles. I have heard that schnauzers are hypoallergenic too.

Thank you both. It is obvious it's the dogs, every time Charlie plays with them he breaks out in hives.

I don't think I want to experiment with different breeds to see if it makes a difference. It wouldn't be fair to the dogs or the kids if it doesn't work. I'm just going to have to live without dogs until the kids are grown and out of the house.

The doctors won't do allergy tests on him because of his age. I don't understand the reasoning behind it, but they just won't do it. So we'll just have to wait and see and hope that he's not allergic to the cats too.

I just hope I can find a home for Dusty. Molly has already been picked up. If I can't find a home for Dusty, I don't know what to do. I won't take him to the Humane Society, but obviously can't keep him either.

In the meantime there is a shampoo to bathe the dog in called Allerpet that reduces the dander and oils from the guard hairs for those who are allergic to pets. Perhaps this would help in the interim until you can place them.

I'm so sorry and I hope your son is ok. My thoughts are with y'all.

Never heard of Allerpet. Can I get that at Petsmart?

I cannot find a listing for it at Petsmart on the quick search that I did. I saw some places online that do carry it (Amazon) and some other petstores in your area may carry it. This is their website which might have a search thing on it for retailers, didn't have a chance to search it though:

Allerpet D shampoo is for the dogs is what you need; and I believe there is a neutralizing solution to use between shampoos now too.

PS. The vet had recommended it to me when I rescued an older cat. I am highly allergic to cats and could not find a home for it. The shelter was a kill shelter and could not turn it in. It allowed me to keep the kitty for years. It works for some, depends on how allergic and how vigilently you use it. I do hope it helps.
