I drove to Ohio and adopted a 10 year old female mini dachshund. Her name is Feather. She was used as a breeder in a puppy mill, but rescue person said she had been adopted by an elderly couple whose health failed. She is very sweet and loving, so I do believe she has had substantial time in a loving home. She's house trained (semi), and was very overweight. I've put her on a diet and am walking her. I had her long hair shaved as it was very matted, and we go to the vet today for checkup. She has what appears to be some fatty tumors on her lower abdomen. I will see what the vet says. Last night she slept with me, and she was in heaven!
I'll try to attach a pic. She is long-haired and the "wild boar" coloring.

Bless her heart! Feather is beautiful and her name is perfect. My greatest passion is rescue and I wish everyone in the world knew about puppymills and backyard breeders.

I've owned two pugs from a puppymill in Lebanon, MO. One, a tiny puppy, died when she was 11-months old from a devastating seizuring disorder that only strikes pugs and is the result of careless, irresponsible breeding.

The other pug, Gumdrop, lived in a wire cage the first 5-6 years of her life - never walked on grass, didn't know how to drink water from a bowl, teeth either broken or worn down to nubs from chewing on her cage, H/W positive, almost deaf from constant exposure to noise...I could go on, sadly!

Gummy was the sweetest, gentlest dog I've ever been blessed to own. She lived to be 14 and died last year from a degenerative spinal disc.

Feather is one of the lucky ones, isn't she? She'll never forget who reached out to help her. Rescued dogs never take life for granted. I don't believe dogs dwell on the past nor worry about the future but I also believe they never forget kindness and love.

I hope the fatty lumps are nothing but I'm sure you realize they could be mammary cancer. At her age (not knowing when or if she has been spayed), the chances are definitely higher.

I'll keep you guys in my thoughts and prayers today - I so hope the lumps are just benign lumps. Feather has to be thinking she has won the lottery, someone has reached out to love and protect her.

I am in love with her coat, it's very beautiful. There's something to be said about older dogs... they teach us so much about life. Bless your heart for rescuing an older dog. I, too, wish more people knew about puppy mills. Sometimes, I feel like I can warn my family and the few friends I have about them until I'm blue in the face and they still don't know how to find a reputable breeder. I hope the tumors turn out to be nothing to worry about. She'll be in my thoughts. She really is a lucky dog.

She is beautiful and its so wonderful that you're willing to give her a good home. My next door neighbor had 2 Dachshunds and she said they have to be picked up very carefully(supported under the ribs and hind legs and have trouble jumping down from higher places like a bed - maybe have a good stool or carry her down from the bed. They have spines that are more susceptible to injury. You may know this already. She's a lucky dog.

Thanks to all of you for your kind words of support.
Feather is such a love puppy, and so very sweet.
Yes, Stumpy, I am feeding her the best dogfood,
and my other pets are eating better as well.
The vet said the fatty tumor that is best
left alone.
One thing the groomer discovered, was that Feather
has tattoos (like numbers) inside both ears, and
a notch cut in one ear. Also, her tail has been cut
off at the end of her backbone. I suspect all of
this is somehow related to the breeder/puppy mill.
It is amazing that she is so sweet and loving considering
her bad experiences.

Taking something broken and fixing it with love is how you even out the balance of the universe. I like to see something that has been worst become best, to see the appreciation in the eyes of something that has been released from bondage, because nothing else truly knows freedom - to truly know bliss because it has known pain. Thank you for rescuing Feather, she looks beautiful, tattoos, lumps and all.

Oh Seeker,

She is beautiful!!

My husband and I have never met a dog or cat we didn't like. We currently have 5 dogs, and 5 cats. For anyone who doesn't know we live on a farm.

Are you still teaching?

EJ

Thanks, EJ! She really is the sweetest thing! When I pet her, she gives little sighs.

((((Seeker)))))

How special Feather is. So glad that she ended up in your loving home where she gets all the love, attention, & care that a puppy deserves. So glad that she got rescued from the horrible puppy mill. Glad she has a wonderful caring mom now to care for her & give her everything she needs.

Hey Seeker! That's such a good story. I'm glad you've found each other. I'm hoping to once again join the ranks of puppy parents. Good for you for taking her in after the hard life she's had. You rock!
