My 8 year old has several pet rats, and yesterday we found one of them lying dead in the cage, with - this part is disturbing!!!!! -

WARNING!!

its left side of the head, eye, ear, brain, was missing, apparently eaten by one or all of the other rats. My son saw it too, and of course it freaked him out. At least there was no blood or anything, just clean gone. I felt so bad for the poor kid! Luckily it wasn't his favorite rat, but still.

On one hand I know that he needs to learn that pet ownership means encounters with death, and on the other hand I wish I could spare him that.

For the first time you can open your eyes
And see the world without your sorrow
Where no one knows the pain you left behind
And all the peace you could never find
Is waiting there to hold and keep you
Welcome to the first day of your life

Just open up your eyes as I lay you down tonight
Safe on the other side
No more tears to cry

I'm sorry. May your son be comforted and may something good come from the incident.
