Hi everyone,

I made a post earlier about how my dog Zeppelin got neutered. Since he came home, he has not had any water (7-ish hours...and he didn't have any this morning either). His pee is dark dark yellow, and is hardly peeing.

He is wearing a cone around his head but he can reach the dog dish...I even tried holding it up to his mouth to see if he'd drink, a few different times, and he wouldn't.

Should I be worried about this?

If he still won't drink tomorrow I would call the vet and ask if he needs to come in for some fluids IV/SQ.

Is he taking pain meds today?

Thank you for your reply.

He was given a local anesthetic to deal with the pain post-surgery...they said it should be worn off by tomorrow. For the next three days, I have to give him half a syringe-full of yellow stuff orally...and I forget what it is! I'm assuming it's for pain/recovery though?

you can see if he wants some crushed ice if you have some or offer him a little water in your hand even...i wouldn't worry until tomorrow too much.

it takes some dogs a while to really come out of the anesthesia...if you vet is still open you can call them & talk to them just to ease your fears...chances are tho he is hurting some & his stomach is still upset some & just doesn't feel like moving, drinking etc. my tomorrow you should be back to normal...if not call them for sure.
Thanks for this!

Offering ice chips is good. Putting some water on your fingers and dabbing some on his lips to start getting him to lick it off might get him started too. Also if you have some apple cider vinegar, a tsp to his water, flavors it some that might entice him to drink. The vets that I have worked for have recommended this as well.

It is not unusual coming out of anesthesia to not want anything, but keep trying. He may feel more like by tomorrow but do call the vet tomorrow if still does not have anything by then.

Hi. What I've done at similar times is use my hands to wet their lips and tongues with water. You could also use a syringe or empty spray bottle filled with water. Good luck. It will pass.

Almost forgot, chicken or beef broth are good substitutes too to get them drinking and especially if not eating either.

Hi everyone,

He definitely has no problem with eating, as usual! And, he had some water this morning. Not much, but some. I think this will pass. Thank you all for your replies.
Thanks for this!

relax mom...make sure you eat too....now comes the hard part..keeping your legs intact as he starts to feel better & still has on the cone of shame...but hey your tv reception will be improved! take many pix so you can shame him later...decorate it & use it was a christmas pix even...trust me worse has been done to a doggie cone head!
