Hi everyone,

I have a male black lab puppy, about 6 months now...his name is Zeppelin.

When I first got him he was really hyper (of course), and a month or so later he was still hyper, but improving! I was happy about that. And now, recently, he has been REALLY hyper. Dragging me along on his leash, which he never used to do before. Running around, jumping, AND trying to hump me A LOT!

Is there such a thing as "doggy puberty"? I wonder just because he's been so horny and hyper lately...it would make a lot of sense. Either way, I wish he would get out of this phase!

make the appt to get him neutered. it is time. he will calm down a ton after he is fixed. & be healthier in the long run.

operation is routine, he goes into the vet or clinic in the morning & is home by the afternoon. doesn't have a lengthy recoup time.

are you planning on breeding him? besides the other question of why? if not you should have him fixed.

I certainly think other animals go through puberty--and yep, it sounds like your pooch is definitely being affected by his hormones. I agree with Stumpy. It's time for a trip to the vet, unless you plan on breeding. (Good thing what all they try to hump doesn't lead to pregnancy! )

Thank you both for replying. I will definitely call my local animal hospital tomorrow to ask about neutering, and the price. I am a little concerned about the price, but I NEED to do this. It's getting insane!

I am not wanting to breed, for sure. One hyper puppy is enough!

try your local animal shelter as well..they sometimes offer swpay/neuter for a reduced price...ask your vet if he knows of any reduced fee clinics..or the same when you call the shelter. there is no harm in taking him to the place that is the cheapest...it is a routine procedure & many groups do offer reduced rates...10,000's of unwanted dogs & cats are destroyed each week so being responsible is a good thing...no one should give you crap for wanting to be responsible for a cheaper price.

go on line & do some research for groups as well..in the us there are groups that do it..but be aware sometimes you do get what you pay for.

if you are going to obedience classes ask the trainer there if they know of any clinics that offer it...

also once he is fixed you should get reduced rates on licensing him (at least in the us anyway).

6 months is also the time for him to get the rabies shot too.
