not in the yard. I am bewildered that she is doing this. She is my elderly adoptee, longhaired dachshund. I know it is probably a chore for her to go down the one step (which I've build up so she has small steps to descent...like 2 inche steps!). She uses the deck exclusively and never goes out into the yard. I'm not home during the day, and I have to go clean up after her daily. The pee sinks into the wood. I don't know what to do about this. Poor little thing is overweight and has such short legs. Any suggestions?

What about putting some plywood on those little steps to make it a ramp? Maybe on only the left or right half? I dunno. Then you could walk her up and down the ramp a couple of times on the leash.

ArthurD...that is actually a good idea. I will get some plywood and try to construct this. Thanks!

Good luck! Maybe put her on a diet, too!

Yes, Maven, I've had her for a year and really have tried to limit her food intake. I feed her once a day, weight control food. Also I must feed her away from the bigger dog, or she'll bully her way in and eat his food too!
She was 11 when I got her, and had been used for breeding, and I believe she had to compete for food all her life. She's mostly blind also, maybe totally blind, but still very sweet and loving, and the big dog guides her around. Wish he'd guide her off the deck! I know she can get up and down the steps, as I've seen her out in the yard...just not to do her business, obviously! ![]() |

If there is a specific spot your pet goes to on the deck perhaps a plastic mat or covering of some kind to protect the wood of the deck from the urine. I have heard of pee mats for training dogs.

LOL, no, Nicks...she goes all over it! I'm thinking this weekend of taking some pet odor remover and hosing down the entire deck. Maybe add the ramp as someone suggested, and be vigilant with taking her out.

Depending on what environment she lived in prior to you adopting her, she may be used to pottying on concrete or wood, and not know that she's supposed to go on the grass. I see that a lot in dogs that have lived in kennels all their lives...they think they are supposed to go on concrete (like my patio). I basically have to re-potty train these dogs. I do that by taking them out on leash to the grass, and waiting until they go potty, then we have a party! I praise them and pet them, and make a huge deal out of pottying on the grass. If I catch them starting to go on the patio, I quickly lead them to the grass and make a big deal out of them finishing up on the grass. If you're consistent and take her out on leash to the grass and reward it daily, she should catch on pretty quick.

I don't know her but I love her! I'm glad she's in a forever home where she gets enough food plus more love than she could imagine.
