I was talking to someone who had a few owls as a pet and also some tortoises and she claims that she lets the tortoise wander around the house all day. This sounds fantastic to me, and really there are a few attributes, including its lack of speed, cleanliness, temperament, that make it the perfect pet. I also like the idea of placing things like a bowl of condiments, or a clock, on its back so that it is basically a walking ornament. I of course am not allowed to have indoor pets since i live with my parents but maybe when the rehab ppl find me a new place to live i can have a tortoise there.

IT, what about tortoise poop around the house?

Personally, I'm more into warm fuzzies for pets, but if a tortoise is what you want so be it!

I loooooove tortoises. They are slow, but I've seen tortoises fight. Had this one desert tortiose that used to intentionally scoot under a much bigger sulcatta(sp) and flip his reptile butt right over. A wily lady for sure.

If they are fed right the poop is pretty solid...easy cleanup. No need for a cage as long as you keep things up off the floor.

One of my favorite animals.

Tortoise poop is easier to clean up than tortoise pee if you don't see where or when they do it.....even my dogs are bad about that. Leo decided to jump the gate the other night & head down stairs while I was gone......& in his anger that I had left him....found some choice places to pee on........ pee is definitely harder to clean up than poop.

The one thing you also have to think about with a tortoise is that they live over 100 years.....so you will have to think about what you are going to do with them in finding another home once you are at the end of your days also.....no one ever thinks about their pet outliving them since most pets have a short life span.....many birds & tortoises have longer life spans than humans.....something that's important for us to think about also because it's important for us to provide for their well being for their whole life.

A tortoise is definitely a slow walker & you will be easier to walk than your spider was.....that's for sure.

Interesting one of the first signs of wild life I encountered on my farm was 2 box turtles mating in my woods....even got that x-rated picture on my digital camera......I really love turtles & tortoises......would be a very good pet......do a lot of research on the care & the temperature & environment they need.....some even hibernate through the winter & you need to provide for that ability in their environment for their health.

Ah, you are a fan of turtle soup????

I would suggest getting turtles that are specifically for eating & allowing your tortoise to enjoy it's long life.....or the SPCA will be after you.....& then can really be NOT NICE when people abuse animals.

That picture is all over the Internet. There's no way he's yours. Unless you do have one and are pretending that's a pic of him when it is not. It's just like when you would tell me you got pet rats but you never did.

I was going to rat up but you kind of insisted that I didn't and I agreed.

No that is a picture of my turtle and it's totally realistic.
