Dog sitter lost my moms dog

We went away on vacation this past week and got a call from the dog sitter. She is a professional, and called to tell us that the dog disappeared while on a walk with our two other dogs. Insane?! So we got. The car and flew back (even tho we were about 6hrs away)! The dog was missing for 8 hrs but luckily, one of the vets we called knew someone who had found a dog that evening.

So we got her back around 1am last nit, but she was bitten and scratched we took her to the vet and they think she was hit by a car bc of the road rash she had all over her body. On top of that. She has some puncture wounds and lacerations so they think she was in a fight with an animal.

Background- mom rescued her as a stray two years ago, she was 8 lbs and had a shattered hip (from a car accident we think) and pregnant with a litter of puppies. Now she's got a great home and has gained back the weight she needed, but she is only 12 lbs! The poor thing is 12lbs but she got hit by a car for the second time,and fought off an animal- over a span of 8 hrs in the woods.

That is insane! But she's doing better- on pain medicine and other antibiotics, but still. What a trooper! Insane story or what?

I'm so glad you got her back! I wish she hadn't gone through what she's gone through, but it sounds like she'll be okay, thank God.

In addition to firing the pet sitter, I'd suggest making her pay the vet bills.

What the heck? How did they LOSE a dog? Can you sue?

Oh my gosh, I am so glad pup is ok and on the mend. Poor lil thing.

I would definitely look into this "pet sitter"... and held responsible.

pet sitter should pay vet bills at the very least. I would not dream of taking someone elses pet into the woods without being leashed as even the very best pet is likely to run if scared

That poor dog. I am glad that the dog is doing alright now and is in better care than that dog sitter. This is why, when I dog sit, I ALWAYS leash the dog. I don't even trust the invisible fence. I still leash the dog even if there is the invisible fence. When I do pet sitting, I take my time and do things right. I hope that this dog never does through that again.

Yeah. If I'd been the dogsitter I'd've felt like ****. And I would've offered to pay the bills. Glad the dog's okay.

Yea, she is normally a great sitter and does it full time- she's an amazing person and it could have happened to anyone. I think of it like me....I'm a teacher. It would be if I lost one of my students on a field trip or something. I would feel absolutely horrible! She was bawling and literally feeling horrible last night. She's a good friend of the family, and we even invited her to thanksgiving last year. So I'm sure in time, things will blow over.

She is paying for the vet bill and not charging my mom for the week of the dog sitting for all three of their dogs for the past week! That is good! Idk if my parents will use her again, but if they do, they will require them to be on a leash at all times. It's our rules this time I guess.

I am thrilled to hear that the sitter is taking full responsibility, everyone does make mistakes I guess- I am just glad the dog is ok, I can't imagine. Best wishes for the whole situation.

I have only one of my eskies that I don't have to use a leash on....she's afraid of her shadow & won't leave my side....so not to worry. Leo on the other hand if off leash, he will run off our of spite & they go chase the neighbor's cows......he gets put on a 15ft leash so he can run around & think he has his freedom until he comes to the end of the leash.

I wouldn't trust JoGI off leash either. He's never had any freedom to run around & I wouldn't trust but he would get lost....so any time they go outside, those 2 are always on leash. We have too many wild animals in my farm area so I wouldn't trust them.

Sometimes we learn the hard way about how our doggies will be off leash. I even trained one of my eskies (Excell) for obedience.....he still did what he wanted no matter how much obedience he knew....so I know eskies are just that breed of dog....too smart for their own good & they get into trouble when they go brain fog.

If the pet setter didn't have problems before this with the dog, I can understand how she wouldn't have been thinking it would happen this time either.....dogs can definitely be unpredictible....& that's when we really know we need to have the leash control over them. It wasn't until Leo ran off & wouldn't stay next to me that I knew I couldn't give him the option to be free.
