I'm so sad. I've come to the conclusion that it's time to put one of my budgies to sleep. She has a fatty tumor on her kidneys. It can't be removed. I slowed the growth of the tumor a little by giving her liquid anti-inflammatory (meloxicam), but eventually the tumor will get big enough to compromise her breathing and kill her. I want to put her to sleep before that happens to spare her of the end-of-life pain and fear. I think it's that time now.

She can't use her right leg. She has trouble perching. She can't preen because the movement puts her so off-balance that she falls off the perch. She won't accept a flat perch that would be easier to sit on. She won't bathe. Such a difficult life must be hard on her now. She had been such a trooper until now: enjoying things in spite of the tumor. But now it's obvious that she's really struggling. Unfortunately, there's no way to shrink the tumor. It was a matter of time anyway.

I'm so sad and stressed out. I've binged and purged twice in the last 24 hours. That doesn't help my depression. Lucy is one of four budgies I got years ago to keep my parrot Davey company. The other three have died - 2 died of tumors themselves. Budgies are prone to fatty tumors. I can call the vet tomorrow and make an appointment. He works part-time, so I don't know when I'll actually get an appointment. Lucy could die in the meantime. I hate seeing her in such pain.

Thats so sad Vossie. Please don't hurt yourself because of it though, OK? Hurting yourself isn't going to help your budgie.
Thanks for this!

You are very brave for thinking about her feelings before your own. That's what makes a person a great human being. Pets are family.

You're amazing.

Hugs to you.
Thanks for this!

This poem I always turn to for pet loss. I've lost two pets near and dear to me, and this poem really helps. I'm sure you have heard of it, but take care of yourself.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
Thanks for this!

It is not an easy decision. I've had to make it three times and it never gets easier. I knew when it was time and the right thing to do. Sounds like you have come to that time too. I'm sorry for you loss. I hope you can stop hurting yourself though. My heart goes out to you.

Well, she's gone now. I couldn't be in the same room while the vet put her to sleep. Too chicken. I feel guilty about that. I just feel bad all the way around. Think I'll go to bed for awhile.

It feels weird that I made a decision to take her life. But at least I could save her from some misery. I wasn't able to do that with other pets. I misjudged the quality of their lives and how long they could hold out.

I know this heartbreak. We used to have a budgie who also got a tumor and had to be put to sleep. (((Hugs)))
