My dog had his ear canal removed 2 years a go, Last month or so he has been scratching his other ear and last night he was bleeding rather heavily
Also he has biting away at his paws quite a lot.

I took him the vet this morning and she said that he might need his other canal removing if this treatment doesn't work so it will leave him deaf.
I have take him back in 1 week to see if the treatment is working.

Thanks for this!

Oh that's so sad So sorry to hear that but hopefully it wont come to that. Even if it does, you will find a way to manage

I'm sorry your dog, to have to go through that. I have a Malteese that keeps getting ear infections and worry about his hearing. But I hadn't heard of this surgery. I know it will be sad for him to lose his hearing, but if it has to be done, he will adjust. Dogs are so good at dealing adversity, even when we are not. Best wished to you both.

I'm very sorry he may lose his hearing. Though as said, dogs are very adaptable. Have you tried a change in foods? My dog used to get ear infections so bad that if she scratched her ear it would spread to her feet. (Causing her to itch her feet) A change of food (To a grain free brand like Wellness Core, Taste Of The Wild, Blue Wilderness) and she hasn't had any ear infections. If he does have to lose his hearing, here are a few tips: Without their hearing, dogs can be taught "Sign language" using hand motions instead of commands, that way the dog can still follow commands like "Come" "Sit" "Stay" "Off" and "Lay Down" even without hearing. Also, for some dogs it can be startling to have you approach them when they can't hear you coming, so make sure your presence is known before touching the dog.

Thank you

He is a western highland terrier and the vet said skin problems are very common in the breed

He is now on steroids and antibiotics since I gave them to him yesterday he has been fantastic, I am really hoping and praying this treatment works but the vet did say he will be on a long course of treatment first, I will always love him no matter what

I hope the treatment works and that surgery can be avoided.

Liverbird,

I am sorry about your dog's condition. What are you feeding him? What medication besides the steroids did the vet give him?

I feed a grain free diet as my dog, at 8 months started to chew the fur off of her upper hind legs & under her tail. I had no idea what was doing this....drove myself insane going to various vets, diets etc. Then After much research, I was feeding the older dog no grain due to arthritis, and started feeding younger dog the same....Who knows what she was allergic to???

Does he have "yeasty" ears??

Give him a hug for me!

Thanks.

He is also on antibiotics and shampoo especially for his skin and coat, Vet said skin conditions are common in westies.
I feed him on chicken mostly, He has liver too, He isn't overweight and vet says I am feeding him okay.

Will see if the treatment is working on Tuesday, He still hasn't scratched, Vet did say he might have to get a skin scrape, I have never heard of this before especially in a dog. Yeah he does have yeasty ears but he won't let me put ear drops down them.
