I have a six and a half year old Netherland Dwarf... I noticed he was passing urine that looked like wet sand and since I'm now practically penniless, I took him back to the rescue centre he came from. She took him to the vets and they confirmed that he had a huge bladder stone. He had surgery to remove it on Monday morning. Since then, he's been sad, walking strangely and in some pain so he went back to the vets twice. The second time, today, they took another x-ray from a different angle and realised that he has a spinal deformity which must have been aggravated during the surgery He's on strong painkillers now and they are hoping to see some improvement, but if after a reasonable length of time he is still not happy, he'll have to be put down

I'm so sorry your little bunny is so ill. I know it must be hard to watch knowing he is in pain. I hope he gets better, but if not I know you will have the strength to do the right thing. I've had to make that decision in the past, so I know it is not easy.

Thanks. I haven't seen him since Saturday, as he is still at the rescue, along with his bonded partner who is healthy. I miss my little man. Worse, I lost my first rabbit to a spine condition, I had to have her put down as well, horrible day

Thank you. I've just been to see him and he did look a bit upset but as time went on I think he's not too distressed to give him some time (but if there is no change in his movement or attitude after a time, I think unless he responds to some kind of wheelchair rig up, it's just not fair on him). He could just about stand for a while as long as he had traction under his paws (and it was some effort) but he couldn't walk unaided (he did have a little roam on the carpet with the aid of a well placed hand). Clearly there is some major deficit in that right back leg, it was angled underneath him and getting in the way. He's still eating like a glutton though, which was more soothing to see. When he was in his cage I was getting Bandit flashbacks, which was upsetting. He seemed more content when I sat him on my lap. Unfortunately since he's not mobile, he has also urinated all over himself and had to be cleaned up.

In contrast, Pandora was like "who are you??"

i'm so sorry about your bunny. it is obvious you love him very much. i have had bunnies for 20 years and currently have 4 and i know taking care of them can be a lot of work. you mentioned he is eating which is great news as that means he is feeling better. it is really important to keep him on pain meds till he recovers. if his spinal issue does not improve and he becomes more handicapped, it might entail a lot more work for you to keep him well. an option besides putting him down is to give him back to the rescue. there is absolutely no shame in doing that as you would be doing it in his best interest. still, you never know..he might just get stronger and stronger and recover completely. they can be very resilient. anyways, whichever route you choose, i wish you all the best. sha

Sounds like you were close because your screen name is based on his name and all.

My apologies for your loss.

Thanks all I think I'm still quite stunned- I cried more before he died than after it. I don't think I've ever loved him more than I do right now and it hurts that he's gone, but I know it was for the best. The biggest thing that is bothering me right now is WHY. I know they said an additional piece of bone on his spine, but why after 6 and a half years... what happened in that operation that caused my rabbit to be crippled??

Pandora is still in my room at the moment. I guess I will probably leave her there a little while so I can be sure his loss hasn't had any dangerous effect on her but she seems to be ok for the moment.
