We went to the vet yesterday. I told her I needed help deciding if putting Callie down was the right thing. She looked her over and asked me some questions. Callie's not in pain. Her face is not pleasant to look at, but it's not bothering her. She seems to be having a good quality of life. Her appetite is good, matter of fact she yells at me when she's hungry. She doesn't care what her face looks like. She's as active as any other 18 year old kitty would be. She still likes to sit in my lap and cuddle. It also turned out she has an infection going on in the area where the tumor is growing. We gave her a shot of antibiotics for that.

The vet said she would go whichever way I decided, that if I felt Callie had enough it would be ok to put her down. Or if I wanted to try the antibiotic and take her home she was comfortable with that. She asked if I would be considering putting Callie down if she didn't have the mess on her face and I said no. That helped me make the decision. We gave her the shot and I brought her home. The vet told me what signs to look for so I'll know when it's time.

Much thanks to everyone who offered support the last week. I truly appreciate it.

oh i'm so happy to hear callie got a reprieve. you have a good vet. last year i had to deal with an abscess in dusty's eye socket (his eye was removed 13 yrs ago). our vet had me catheter colloidal silver into it. some believe that is a good broad spectrum antibiotic. just sharing to give you one more possible option in helping to keep callie healthy. anyways, all the best!

Thanks everyone. The antibiotic seems to have helped some. The nasty smell she had is fading. She's a little perkier today. There's no way she is ever going to be all better again and I know it. Eventually the cancer will be fatal. BUT I'm more than willing to accept the extra time this bought us.

TerryL, you are right. She is a good vet. She's caring and compassionate, yet knows her stuff.

I'm so glad you get to have extra time with Callie. I know it will give a lot more memories to make.

Shes a brave girl, a fighter. Perhaps it looks worse than it is. Bless her, I hope it slows down and she keeps going. Nice vet to not push pts.

The antibiotic helped her a lot. The nasty smell is gone along with the infection. She has more energy with the infection gone. She bloody YELLS at me to feed her even though she's not much of a talker otherwise. She cuddled in my lap last night while we watched some TV. I know what the eventual outcome is going to be, but am enjoying our extra time while we have it.
