That is so adorable! I wonder how you go about having a pet porcupine..can you not pick them up or snuggle them? I would think the quills hurt!

Ok, first of all, I totally want a porcupine now! I didn't know they made sounds! That's so adorable!

Having watched animal experts like Jack Hannah and @JeffAnimalGuy on talk shows, you actually can pet them...carefully. Their underside (the belly) is very soft. As for the quills, you can sort of pet them, but you've got to pet them from front to back, or you'll get stuck. But supposedly, they're good pets.

I worked at a wildlife rehabilitation center and I took care of a porcupine. I had to move him with a rubber mat because their quills are actually hook like at the end and will burrow deeper into your skin as a defense mechanism. A girl at the facility got barbed by him and she cried when we pulled out the quills. The only way in the U.S. you could own one would be for educational purposes so it wouldn't be a pet per se, but if you got the permit they could live in your house with you and be very pet like.

IT...that's a baby hedgehog! Well, it LOOKS like a hedgehog! I'll have to research this!

Apologies, IT...It appears you are correct. That IS a baby porcupine!

Teddy Bear, the porucupine, is part of Zooniversity's animal educational program. He was found as an infant without mama, and rescued. He has fully imprinted with humans. Here's the website info on Teddy:

I feel awful for dogs (or any other animal) I see with all those quills sticking out of them! Most were probably only wanting to play. Aww.

They had a porcupine on Live with Kelly Ripa or whatever it's called (the old Regis Philbin show) yesterday.

Dogs are often rebuked harshly by other animals who do not share their level of playfulness
