How did your pets get their names?

Charlie came with his name from the humane society. Chloe had the name Winter when I adopted her, but I kept calling her Chloe by accident so I determined that was what she was supposed to be named and so we made that change.

My boyfriend named Loki, our senegal parrot, after the god of mischief.

My cats include Garfield, who is orange and white, large and in-charge, and loves to eat; Lila, who is my pretty princess; Duchess, who may appear ungroomed, but she is regal to me; Midnight, who is fluffy and black; Shadow, who is shorter-haired and black; Cozy, who is sweet and likes to cuddle (when we had her indoors, anyway); Queenie, who is a calico that I named after a character in American Horror Story: Coven; Jezebel, because she's so beautiful; and there are a couple more I haven't named yet.

let's see... of the current crew.....

Ivan was born during the hurricane season of 2004. Our part of Florida was hit hard by a series of storms. There were five puppies in the litter. Each got a hurricane name that seemed to fit their personality. Ivan seems like a dignified name. Ivan, the dog, is a very old soul, even when he was a pup so it seemed to fit.

Abby is named for the character on NCIS. No she's not a super scientist,. I like the character so she got the name.

Poor Boomer lived with me for weeks before he got a name. I just couldn't find out that fit. He very standoffish. Then one day during a thunderstorm he threw himself in my lap after a really loud clap of thunder. I said something like "you are afraid of the thunder boomers." It seemed to fit to call him Boomer.

When I got Dobby the cats I had had A, B, C names. I wanted a D name to continue the alphabet. Dobby is very demanding for my attention. I thought of Dobby, the house elf, in Harry Potter who says "Harry Potter, Harry Potter" as he follows Harry around. It stuck.

I explained in another post that Mikey has a big mouth and a loud voice. The second night he was here he was following me around the house MEOWING. I said you are a real Motor Mouth Mike aren't you?" I started calling him Mike. A friend suggested Mikey. I like that better.

The lady who gave me Mikey told me that her three year old grandson had named the baby Chrissy. Somehow Chrissy did not seem like a good name for a boy cat (kind of like a Boy Named Sue). It fits the little girl though. I changed the spelling to Krissy because I like that better.

The horses, Maverick and Kyoti came with those names.

My hubby named our lab Astra because he liked the sound of the name and it means "star."

Misty was named because we had a bunch of liquor boxes around just after we had moved. We adopted her a few days later, and one box had had some alcohol with "mist" in the name. Plus I just like the name.

Sammy came with his name. We adopted him from a friend of my son who could no longer keep him.

When I was in third grade I got a kitten and named him Donald after a boy I liked in my class!

In the last 25 years:

A white peek a poo with charcoal black eyes named Panda

A gorgeous and wonderful Golden Retriever that I named Clicquot after the French champagne - right color, bubbly personality!

The next, a cat adopted from a feral rescue group was a little Houdini, skilful at hiding and midnight tricks. Her name was Taz.

We realized Clicquot ended in "t" and the new cat began with "t" then the next animal's name would begin with "z".

Along came another Golden named Zoni.

Then, 2 kittens at once, Isis (goddess), who was a pretty Tortie and Idgie, impish character from Fried Green Tomatoes. The named suited the devilish little gray tabby.

We're without animals right now. I hope that changes soon.

I forgot Fluffernutter (aka "Fluffy"), because she's fluffy and comes close but then backs away (not really nutty, but I liked the name), and Fizzy, named after the word some people (in the UK, I think) use for soda/pop ("fizzy drinks").

Hubby named his cat Patrick Starr after the Spongebob character.
Mom named her pit/lab mix Agape because she said she was full of love
The chihuahua came with the name Mickey when he got dumped on us.
And I have no reason for the name that I gave the cats. They weren't named after anyone or anything. the names just seemed to fit them.
They are Giavanna female short haired, Agatha female long haired, Izabella medium haired female, Cleopawtra calico female, Stewart orange tiger male, Sir Reginald Citizen Snips McWhisker the first silver tiger male

I would like it noted that all our cats have the last name McWhisker. My bother thought it was cute and added it on. With Reggie I named him Reginald and my brother said he looked too regal to just be a Reginald. So he added the Sir and Citizen Snips the first to his name. If I remember correctly he got the Citizen Snips part from a Futurama cartoon

When I held Amy in the palm of my hand when she was just 4 weeks old, a song sung by Amy Lee of Evanesance popped into my head, so she was named Amy Lee.

Abby was the name given to her by the pound we got her from because she was from the city of Aberdeen. Swiffy looked like a mop. I looked trooper in the eyes and could tell he was a trooper who had been through a lot.

My guy is a part british blue short hair and very dignified, so I named him Sir Laurence Knight of the Crescent Moon. He has a crescent shape on his lower belly and the name seemed to fit.

A dark tortey I had was named Inca, it just fit her.

My first cat was named Isis after the Egyptian goddess.

My dog was named snoopy, cause I was young.

I have a Shiloh Sheppard names Julebarz. I call her Jules. The name comes from a dog my mother had when she was a little girl. I named my Siberian Husky, Ariel, because she looks so angelic when she's sleeping; not so angelic when she's awake.
I also have an orange tabby who's name Psytzi, because he's a crazy cat.
Pets I've lost were named Kiki, Nikita, Sam and Sasha.
Aren't pets just the best thing in the world?

Yes, they are, KikiCat! Better than chocolate!

I named another of my cats/the neighborhood's cats that I've only seen two or three times. He(?) is a gray tabby with striking blue eyes, so I named him(?) Frankie, after Frank Sinatra ("Ol' Blue Eyes"). You young folk may have to Google him.
