My two females have a big appetite and their weight reflects that. I want to decrease their food intake, but they cry and I give in. Do I ignore their cries and only feed them portioned amounts?

Are there any tricks?

What kind of food do you give them? You could try feeding them with a diet food - or are they fussy? Also try not to give them too much wet food as this has a lot of fat in it, so if they get wet food maybe only give it to them as a treat every now and again?

The first week or so with decreasing their food intake is always the hardest unfortunately but try not give into their cries. Can you maybe try playing with them instead to keep them busy/ distracted whilst also making them exercise?

Good luck and if you have any qsts don't be afraid to ask. I foster cats so if I don't know the answer to a qst I can quite easily ask my fellow foster carers Talking to your vet may be helpful also to recommend the right food for your kittys to help them lose some weight.

Are you feeding them dry food? I've read that many cats over ear that because it has more fillers and not enough fat, so they are getting too much calories just trying to get their requirements met.

My guy gets one can of wet food divided up into three servings throughout the day and has a high protein dry food that's out all day, but he is normal weight because he doesn't over eat, he's getting enough of what he needs.

Make sure any dry food you give then is high in protein and low in carbs. Gradually decrease the amount and if you want supplement it with wet. Look for food that list meat as the first ingredient, even though it cost more they need less so it works out in the end. If you do buy diet food make sure it is high protein not just more filler or they will cry for more.

Another thing I've hear is that bored cats eat more, if they have toys but don't use them maybe you can try setting a designated play time each day to get them moving more?

Thanks for the responses. Yes, I feed them dry food only. They could definitely use some exercise.

Take it up at night. Or feed them so much in the morning and at night. My fat cat lost weight though when I went to free feeding just dry food.
