My great dane will not go outside when it is raining to pee. My whole family takes turn to take her out to pee in hopes we will be the lucky one. Nope, she peed in the hallway. Any advise?

buzz bee, Is she a puppy? I would put a rain coat on both of you. Put her on a leash. Go outside and walk slowly back and forth were you want her to pee. Occasionally repeating the phrase "go pee". Do not play with her or do anything other than "go pee". Most dogs will eventually go. When she does pee, tell her what a good girl she is. Take her inside and dry her thoroughly with a warm towel.

Another method would be to try crate training. Good luck!
Thanks for this!

Thank you. Yes she is four months old and she is crate trained. (for the most part) I just need to remember, "this too shall pass".

BuzzBee, obviously you should move to the desert so she never has to go out in the rain!

It's too bad they can't all love the water like a lab; my lab mix bounded out the door and played in it, actually trying to catch the drops. However, I have shortcoated viszla mix and blackmouth cur; both as puppies that did not like the rain AT ALL that would rather go in the house than go out in it when not in their crates, much to my dismay. I used treats (really good treats, something they can't refuse) to coax them outside but also when they went to the bathroom with positive words for reinforcement, making a really big deal out of it, overly enthusiastic. We get too much rain here to be putting a raincoat on and off all the time. I also took them out in the rain to play so they would get used to it sooner, playing something really fun so they don't notice it, using favorite toys and treats.

Friends have also used raincoats and/or transitioned to umbrellas over them to get them go out and slowly taken them away, but used treats too to get them to go out and when they have gone to the bathroom for rewards. It worked.

Good luck, in time will get used to it with patience, consistency, and persistence.

Fresia, I used to joke that my Lab Al forgot to read that part of the manual how to be a Lab. He hated getting wet. Thought I was trying to drown him when I took him swimming. He would only go out in the rain long enough to take care of business then run back in the house. If heaven forbid it started to rain while he was outside he would get this ultra sad expression and look like he thought we hated him.
Thanks for this!

Awwww, ((((Al)))))) they all have their quirks don't they just like us (?!), lovable that they are, but idiosyncrasies nonetheless. Bless him and them all.
